Music Video extra enhancement possibility

This [Implemented] Local Media Assets - Movies - Add Music Video as Extra_Type indicates the first half of this request is possible now. Has the second half of this request been considered since the first half appears to be in place?

First for Movies, TV Shows and (Other) Video support the following (which appears to already be in place)

{movie, tv show, video library directory}
---- {first letter directory - only appears to work for movies and possibly video; does not work for tv shows (optional)}
-------- {movie, tv show, video {movie, tv show, video year(optional)}}
------------ … normal stuff
------------ Music Video (or Music)
---------------- {artist name}
-------------------- (music video name}.(music video type}
------------- or {artist name} - (music video name}.(music video type} ## preferred in my opinion
--------- or {artist name} - (music video name}-musicvideo.(music video type}

An automated entry should be made into the music library as follows using a single directory syntax. This could be extended to other MUSIC types included in movie, tv show and video (other) libraries.

{music directory)
---- {first letter of artist directory (optional)}
-------- auto xref name as follows all considered a single file name entry
------------ {artist name}
------------ " - "
------------ (movie, tv show, video name) {movie, tv show, video year(optional)}}
------------ " - "
------------ (music video name}
------------ “-musicvideo.”
------------ (music video type}

The reason I believe this requires plex program support is the fact than in movies, tv shows and videos (other) the directory structure is not the same as music. In the case of movies, tv shows and videos (other) the “pseudo album” name would be the movie, tv show or video other name that would be the directory that contains the music video entry. In single folder syntax this is more obvious the movie, tv show video name would precede the artist name followed by the track name ‘.’ track type. To get these into the Music Library format the first two names could be flipped by plex.

Thanks for considering this.

Can you share a specific example of what you have in mind?
That schema of yours is not clear to me.

As a side note…
If you want to organize tv-shows or music libraries in first-letter directories, you’ll need to add those first-letter directories to your library (instead of the top-level music/tv-show folder).

As for local extras… you already can have various extras for artists/albums. Those are documented in the related support article. Side note #2: you can also add music-video type extras to movies/shows (though it’s not included in the official documentation for some reason).

Kids videos commonly have associated music videos. My daughter (mother of my grand children) is fond of many of the music videos as music. So if the creation of a music video in a Movie directory ie …/{movie {(year)}}/Music Video/{artist} - {track}.mkv so my grandsons can find it should create a corresponding entry in a Music library under …/{artist} - {movie {(year)}} - {track}-musicvideo.mkv so my daughter can find it. Since the extra in the movie source file could also be stored in a single directory format …/{movie{(year}} - {artist} - {track}-musicvideo.mkv or even a more movie like format under …/{movie {(year)}}/Music Video/{artist}/{track}.mkv there are multiple possibilities for the program to reformat.

Plex does not allow that kind of cross-references.
That being said you can already do something like this – even using the same file (though Plex will treat them as different items).

Example:

Movies <- the folder linked to your movie library
  Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)
    Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018).ext
    Zero (Imagine Dragons)-video.ext

Music <- the folder linked to your music library
  Imagine Dragons
    Zero (Ralph Breaks the Internet version)-video.ext

Where .ext refers to your file extension(s).
Depending on what OS you’re using you can create a hard-link of the music video to the respective other place. This way the file will be physically stored once on your system but recognized in both.

2024 clean-up: abandoned, can already be achieved/implemented
