Sorry if this is being brought up else where.
Plex’s current solution for Music Videos is not good enough.

1. Needing the files to have a special extension means that either I cannot play the files elsewhere or have to have two copies of the file. I should be able to have the files be normal file video file types
2. Requiring the Music videos be paired with the artist or as extras from other content means I have no central location to go to when I wanna play music videos.
3. Not having the right metadata fields. Without proper metadata fields it is difficult to sort and search through large music video libraries.

I know there are hacky work arounds out there, but Plex should have a built in one. What I suggest at a minimum is that there is a “Music Video” type library with music type metadata. This way if there is not a good way to scrub for the metadata at least it can be inputted manually. (Which I am already doing)

You don’t need to have any kind of special extension. They just need to be videos with any kind of video extension… MKV, MP4, AVI

What I suggest at a minimum is that there is a “Music Video” type library with music type metadata.

Not exactly a bad idea, however I am not sure if there is any database on the internet that contains metadata for music videos, and that is exactly how Plex gets its metadata, from places like… https://thetvdb.com/ and https://www.themoviedb.org/

In other words, there is nowhere to get that metadata from.

EDIT: However I would agree that what is currently in place ain’t perfect…

I was going based on this: Adding Local Artist and Music Videos | Plex Support. I realize music videos that are extras on movies and tv shows are handled as extras. If there is something else out there that I missed then that is my bad.

I don’t know of any music video databases either, but being able to manually enter in the information into relevant fields would still go a long way.

Metadata plugin for music videos

I would love to see someone developing a metadata plugin that uses the IMVDb for its information. They do have an API in beta that can be used for something like this. I have a large collection of music videos in a separate library (about 5000 videos), and manually going through this to add metadata would be an herculean task…

I suggest you comment/vote in that thread in order to avoid distracting/dispersing votes.

As a side note… if your only target is to have a central folder with your music videos and see them as well with your artists or as extras for shows/movies… there’s always the option to place individual hard-links (no duplicate files, just a file-system index).
