Does plex pass support music videos? Or, Is there a workaround to incorporate music videos?

Plex can incorporate music videos into a Music library as described here.

If you’re looking to have a separate library for music videos, there isn’t a specific “Music Video” library type in Plex. You can use the “Other Videos” library type, but there’s no agent for matching or gathering metadata, so you would have to do everything manually.

I’ve attempted this in multiple ways including the one linked above. Wether the music videos are in the same directory as music music or in their own folder, they aren’t recognized. I don’t need plex to gather metadata because the id3 tags are all correct. However, the tags I made for smart playlists are in the “comments” section and for some reason plex doesn’t use look at the comment field.

The tag format in video files is not the same as in music files, so I don’t think a Plex Music library will read the tags in a video file. Even in music files, I’m sure Plex does not read the Comment tag.

Can you show screenshots of your File Manager showing an album with video files in the same folder as the music files?

I just want plex to read the id3 tags like every other player. There is no way i am going through every one of my 40,000+ music video files and re naming them “-video” even if previous testing with that method had worked. If plex can’t just import the id3 info that’s already there then I won’t be able to use it for music. Sucks, I really wanted to replace itunes. Plex is great for movies & shows. Their music department is really lacking. I thought that would be easy for them to integrate.

  1. Create a new library with just your music videos organized by artist.
  2. Use “Other videos” not movies or tv shows.
  3. In the advanced options when adding a new library, select “Personal Media Agent”
  4. In Agents, select "Local Media Assets (movies) and select the gear icon. Set the path to where your music videos are. Note: I am unsure if it supports multiple locations.

This will allow your music videos to appear with the artists if you have music on your server.
It will also allow you to make a smart playlist of just that library item to shuffle.
I believe it will read the metadata embedded in the video.
