My Cloud Pro mount remote share

Hi,

I recently ordered the new two bay My Cloud Pro with Plex. I also have a separate My Cloud running HDHomeRun DVR.

I run Plex currently on a DIY Linux server. I plan to migrate to my new My Cloud Pro. One of things I do is mount a permanent share on my Plex Linux server to the My Cloud DVR so I can then add that share to Plex to automatically scan and add to its database.

I have searched the net but I cannot find a reference to how to mount a remote network share from a My Cloud Pro? I could ssh into the My Cloud Pro probably and mount the share but it would disappear after a reboot. It is not clear to me that the My Cloud Pro Web interface will expose this capability to the user? Plex only understands local mounts so the ability to permanently mount a remote share is a requirement for my usage scenario.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I would like to know this as well. Considering a My Cloud Pro (for the transcoding), but keeping all my media on my Synology DS2413+ (12 bays).

I have a similar problem. Just got my new 4 bay My Cloud Pro & Plex on it won’t access any network shares, only local files (but my existing other network devices run Windows rather than Linux).

There doesn’t seem to be a way to access network shares of other devices on the NAS. Other devices can see the network shares of the NAS, but not vice versa.

PMS on the My Cloud Pro does not allow browsing network shares, and manually typing in the shares (by name or by IP, like “\COMPUTER-PC\Files” or “\192.168.1.2\Files”) doesn’t work. There also does not appear to be any way to map network drives from the NAS OS (so in PMS,. you would see them as local files).

Would really love to see an answer either way. If these My Cloud systems can’t be shared to (only shared from), I’ll have to return it…

Enabling SSH & editing fstab via nano command seems to work for NFS shares.
Without apt-get, to install CIFS, I’ve been unable to access SAMBA shares yet.

Still trying though! Will let you know what I find.

Did you go to the WD site and ask there? it is a WD product, not a Plex product.

Thanks for the attempted redirect, @rsava.

Since you asked, I do have a support ticket into WD, and am waiting for my 2nd response. Also, there is a request for help on their forums too. I’ve also asked for help on Reddit, so that the chance of finding a solution is higher. I’d very much like to solve this problem and willing to accept any interested party who would like to help, while being very thankful for any help provided.

However, its a little disingenuous to call this box not a Plex product, as Plex marketed it to directly to me, gave me a coupon for the product due to Plex’s exclusive relationship with the manufacturer, and WD’s packaging highlights its Plex capabilities repeatedly on the packaging. I bought this because Plex told me how great Plex is on this thing. Except the exact reason for the issue is because Plex does not support network share paths natively, so I must rely on the My Cloud Pro OS, based off Debian, to map the network shares so Plex can access them.

This is as much a Plex problem as a WD problem. A solution by either party is all I’m searching for. Especially since its in everyone’s best interest to make the product as successful as possible, which this issue unresolved would prevent.

I’m not trying to knock anyone, BTW; both products here are awesome!

Which reminds me… as I said, I’m willing to accept help from any source to fix this problem. Since you chimed in, @rsava, care to contribute? Got any help other than, “this is someone else’s problem?”. I appreciate any positive contributions you may have, so lets hear them.

This is as much a Plex problem as a WD problem.

Not at all, Plex merely offers a piece of software that runs on it and does everything Plex say it will do on that unit. Just because you wish Plex to work differently does not mean they have any liability in your dissatisfaction with the product from WD. You have a problem with how the NAS unit itself deals with mounting network shares.
However, the network share part of the the NAS unit is on the WD implementation of the OS and how it utilizes the OS and in no way a Plex product or issue.
That is solely a function of the unit itself, not the Plex software and how WD implemented things.
No, I don’t have any other help other than you need to go to the source of the problem, not try and place blame on Plex.

Well, thanks for coming on back to confirm you don’t have anything to contribute in way of any help, @rsava. Very kind of you.

Never accused anyone of having “any liability in [my] dissatisfaction with the product”. Not interested in “blaming” anyone for anything, thankyouverymuch. As I stated before, both the My Cloud Pro & Plex are amazing products.

Came to this forum, as well as others including the manufacturer’s, seeking help with an issue I have with these two products working together from any nice & intelligent people who might be able to & were willing. You can’t help here, @rsava so thank you for your time & have a great day.

I had hoped this product had functionality that at current it doesn’t appear it possesses. I’m hoping there is a way around that, so I don’t have to return the product. Asking for help on the forum of the company who designed the separate custom software involved specifically for this hardware [with dedicated hardware decoding] is not inappropriate. In fact, its the purpose of the forums [& why its cross posted in the forum created by Plex to discuss issues on My Clouds]. Discussing these issues will increase the chance others who may be interested in purchasing the device are aware of its limitations, so they don’t make a purchase they regret, & that is a good thing.

From a helpful user on Reddit, I was able to work out how to mount NFS shares, and would be happy to provide instructions to others who find this thread how to do so. I am still seeking a way to mount SAMBA shares. Anyone who might be able to help, I appreciate the assistance.

You state:

_Not interested in “blaming” anyone for anything, thankyouverymuch. _

Except you posted this in your first reply to me:

_This is as much a Plex problem as a WD problem. _

In case you missed that part in school, that is pacing blame. I’m done talking with you, you’re too hard headed and don’t want to face the truth of your problem. Typical.
Good bye.

I am still hoping for a solution for this issue (mounting remote shares in Plex). I thought I had a solution using the Share Aggregation option on the PR2100. When I create a link to my HDHomeRun share it shows up as a network share on my PR2100. Frustratingly, when I try to browse to this share using the PR2100 this link (symbolic link?) is no where to be found? So, I am still hitting a wall on how to add a remote share to my PR2100 Plex library.

It would be very helpful if either Plex or WD could arrive at a fix for their paying customers. I pay for Plex and also bought the PR2100 as a promotion from a Plex email.

Thanks.
