My DSM 7 saga

Thanks @ChuckPa for all your hard work!

Here’s my saga in case anyone else is interested, I have a DS1821+ that I waited a week post release (yesterday) to install DSM 7. I read this thread and the multiple sets of instructions to make sure I didn’t miss anything.

  1. Uninstall PMS package in DSM 6 prior to upgrade (Plex folder with Library all intact and ready for migration - good)
  2. Installed DSM 7
  3. Rebooted
  4. Installed Plex server (beta) from the package manager (maybe this was my goof?)
  5. Nofitication came up change permissions for PlexMediaServer as SystemInternalUser gave full control and check Apply to Subfolders and files - took 15 mintues and then Saved.
  6. Continued with the install - hit Done and instantly got kicked back to desktop (wtf?)
  7. Plex is installed already? Opened up the app and it can’t see my server red triangles on all my categories.
  8. Deep breath - ok lets uninstall DSM7 - picked option Erase.
  9. Now everything is gone old Plex folder is empty - panic sets in … Realize that I still have snapshots so I revert back to a few hours ago - Plex library files are back.
  10. Now install DSM 7 package from Plex.tv, get notification about shares - redo FullControl for PlexMediaServer user. Another 15 minutes
  11. Click done - get kicked back to desktop again after Done - WWWTFFFF!!!
  12. Uninstall DSM 7 Erase again and Plex server is intact - no migration took place
12.5 Go through cycles of installs and uninstalls with various options without luck until…
  13. Install DSM 7 - this time migration takes 15 minutes and it looks like migraion is happening and Plex is up - everything looks normal.
  14. Spoke too soon - music and photo folder are avail since I gave PlexMediServer R/W access but video is fubar even though I gave PlexMediaServer the same R/W access - Plex can’t see the folder!
  15. Now I’m tearing my hair out but I know better than to start doing chown as root
  16. Read more posts - someone says to set Windows ACL on video folder? windows acl (wtf?)
  17. I go back into share and turn on acl with the ominous warning that this can’t be rolled back or something - ugh!
  18. Finally custom option opens up for PlexMediaServer in Permissions and I give full control and apply to Sub Folder and files.
  19. Finally, Finally Plex is working as before.
  20. Sit back in my chair at 1:40am and thank my lucky stars - then off to bed.

To anyone following with weird permissions on their video folder - do yourself a favor and search this thread fully for ACL.

Thanks again to everyone here for getting us all through this.

If I may comment?

Thank you for emphasizing two very important points.

  1. Download from Plex.tv/downloads

  2. The VITAL importance of "Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files.

These are the two most commonly missed steps

Ah @MacInOhio I feel your pain. I’ve previously zipped up that entire folder when doing migrations but it was convenient to easily rollback a previous snapshot as its more elegant and well supported by btrfs.
I believe the app is now in /volume1/@apphome/PlexMediaServer/Plex Media Server and unfortunately it seems that Snapshot Replication cannot see that folder. So now if it gets corrupted we’re screwed unless you want to roll back to whenever you have a copy of that zip file .
I really wish that Synology made this process easier to work with, the PMS guys have to make do with whatever restrictions get foiseted upon them. Its simply ridiculous that they allow a package this important to just break!

Folks,

If you read through the Issues thread,

  1. Now that DSM 7.0 is released & reasonably stable
  2. I am finishing
    a. Backup
    b. Restore
    c. Import
