Issues migrating PLEX from DSM6 to DSM 7

Hi,

I updated from DSM6 to DSM7 some time ago and had PLEX issues.
For context, see Plex Media Server - Synology DSM 7 Preview - Issues ( Archive ) - #2015 by LaVerchere

Saw there was an update today, so tried again and here is the current state:

image

  • bottom “PLEX PC” runs on my PC, is and was always fine
  • middle “PLEX NAS” is a new empty one which got created instead of migrating the top “PLEX NAS” one

I still see my old “PLEX NAS” library files, so migration obviously didn’t happen
Tried to apply the “how to” without luck so far

Here are the logs, hoping someone can point me in the right direction
logs.zip (441.0 KB)

Thx!

not the first time, when saw it didn’t go well, googled and landed in this forum
Since then, tried few times without success so far

Shared folder rights are set for a while:

If the option is greyed out, then the ACL’s are already set.
it is greyed

give PlexMediaServer Custom permissions
it was,

saw another thread saying R/W was a fix worth trying so I did
will change it back again

DO NOT PLACE MEDIA ANYWHERE INSIDE THE PlexMediaServer SHARED FOLDER

  • Just as with DSM 6, put media in the wrong place and bad things happen.
  • Media can be placed anywhere else on the NAS except here.

I know I have some I installed back in the early days
might be it?

May be wrong but did my best to do this migration instruction few times already and confess am pessimistic that the outcome would be different this time

  • removed all media
  • set rights for the “internal” user
  • downloaded the new plex installer
  • followed the “how to” for the 12th time

Same outcome, I abandon, tried too many times already

I will rebuilt my PLEX NAS server from scratch

The installation takes 20s or so and then seems to quit after successfully claiming the servers from the token

Hi,
I am on DSM 6 still, but just upgraded to 1.24.2.4973.
Is it now safe (and easy) for me to upgrade to DSM 7, or do I still have to jump hoops?

Well, is this ever going to change? So that we can just press “upgrade” on DSM 6 to 7?
I mean, this is quite a lot to ask from the “average user” (not that I am, but I just don’t want the “trouble”)

If I may add here?

Had Synology not yanked the rug out from everyone with their redesign of DSM 7 internals,

It WOULD have been a seemless upgrade, just like it has been since DSM 5.

Unfortunately, they took away ALL administrator privileges when installing.
The package doesn’t even install itself anymore – DSM does.

DSM gives back the locations it decided to use and then we had to write all the scripting and procedures to make it work.

I CAN tell you, once you’ve upgraded to this, PROVIDED they don’t change it again,

It will be seamless.

As example, PMS 1.24.2, released in PlexPass today, contains a major update to how PMS runs in DSM 7.

I was able to leverage what was done for the initial installation and make all existing DSM 7 upgrades seamless and automatic.

Today, anyone already using DSM 7 simply did a “Manual Update” and it was done.

Okay, so I’ll go ahead and try.

Was the progress anything else before on DSM 7? I mean, I’ve always done “Manual Update” on DMS 6 and currently on 1.24.2.

Okay, so I uninstalled Plex on DSM 6, installed DSM 7, tried to follow the guide and installed Plex again, didn’t get any warnings like in the guide and now I don’t know what happened.

Edit: Hold on, might be able to fix it. Permissions and stuff - But no warning was given, so the guide was kindda hard to follow.

Okay, so now it “just” says “No content available”, where do I go from here?

Ahh great, it renamed my Plex setup to what my NAS name is instead of using the custom name it was given a long time ago. How do I recover from this?
Is it the “claim”-something?

I did read the instructions, and followed it, yes.

Now I have 2 servers registered.
1 empty and 1 that I cannot connect to (which is the correct one)

Well, the pinned ones I can see, yes.
But the server is stated as “unavailable” and just tries to connect over and over again.

Still doesn’t work, now I just have 2 servers with the same name.

There is no Migration.log

Nothing changed. Just to clearify, I’m not gonna setup all of the libraries again and lose all watch-data and so on… right?

There is still a Library (with 20gb of data) and tmp_transcoding folder

No, I don’t, because I didn’t setup the libraries, I don’t want to setup anything, I just want it to work without all these hoops.

I don’t quiet understand what you mean.
I want the spinning to stop, and for the old libraries to be accessable.
I have family using this, I cannot tell them to change something (again).

I don’t understand your questions then.
What is “the new server”, is it the empty one? If then, yes, I can see “volume1” in “Add Folder”, if that is what you’re asking.
