My PLEX Player on a Sony (Android) TV is not working right

I have been using PLEX for several years. Mostly I have used external Roku Ultra boxes, with the PLEX Player app downloaded to that. A few months ago I purchased a TCL Series 6 4K television and installed the PLEX Player on that. Since the TCL is a Roku TV, everything in the PLEX app looks and works the same.

But most recently I purchased a Sony X900H 4K television. It is an Android, so I downloaded the PLEX player onto the Sony. It looks similar, but not quite the same. Worse yet, it does not work reliably. Ho so?

My photo, video and TV show libraries work fine. However, all my audio, or music, libraries are having problems. About half the time when I launch a particular music set the sound never plays. I back all the way out of PLEX then start over. Usually it then plays. But when I switch to a different set of audio tracks it will malfunction again. Worse yet, about 1 in 4 times I go through this procedure PLEX gives some “There was an error” type of message that flashes up on screen. About 1 in 10 times PLEX just crashes.

I can’t discern whether the Android PLEX player is dysfunctional, or that my installation of it is corrupted.

Any thoughts? I can send screen shots if needed.

i have a slightly older sony android i use the offical plex app … its mostly fine … sometimes it helps to switch off at the wall and start again … it got worse when i used a thumbdrive with the tv … either theres some memory leak or the cache fills up … rebooting tv fixes it … am sure its an andriod issue not really the app or the tv

Perhaps I should reboot the Sony TV, or unistall/reinstall PLEX?

Fwiw, I have the same problem. Everything worked great until a few days ago. Now, Plex (I’m running version 8.12.2.22756) on my Sony Android TV won’t play any videos from my own Plex server. Browser playback, iPad and Android (not Android TV) playback work fine on the same media files.

can i ask are you using wifi or ethernet to connect to your network…if its wifi …are you using the 2.4ghz or 5ghz wifi…please use 5ghz if you can …make sure your router is either close enough or good signal … if signal is poor and your near router or same room consider changing the wifi channel

I am connected to the wifi in my AT&T fiber modem/router. I am not sure whether it is 2.4 0r 5.0, but I am thinking it is a single combined Wifi channel.

I will check on it.

This problem continues. I have recycled the Sony TV and my media server, but I am still having problems with the audio tracks not playing, and the PLEX app crashing.

I am thinking this PLEX Player for Android is malfunctioning. I hope PLEX experts come up with a fix, or I may have to connect my Roku Ultra device.

So here is a summary of what I am experiencing when I attempt to play music/audio files on my PLEX Player installed on my Sony 4k TV . . .

I turn the TV on and open PLEX.

I go to one of my rock sets, Aqualung by Jethro Tull. I start the set with the title song, “Aqualung” and everything sounds great. Before completing the play of the Aqualung track I go back one level, still in the same Aqualung set, and select “Locomotion Breath”. It starts to play. All good.

Next, before completing the playback of “Locomotion Breath” I go back two levels and select a different music/audio set: Thick as a Brick. I click to start play of the first track and I get an error message that flashes up briefly. There is no sound. The normal bar that appears shows up, but it only has two functions–pause and start, there are none of the “advance” functions appearing.

So, I have found in the past that if I exit PLEX, I can usually go back in and playback once again works (if only for a short while). Only this time, it does not work. PLEX has not reset. I still cannot play any tracks–except, strangely, I can go into the Aqualung set and play both “Aqualung” and “Locomotion Breath.” However, oddly, I cannot play any other track in that set, only those two.

So, I exit PLEX and turn off the TV expecting that to reset PLEX, as it sometimes does. Only this time PLEX is not reset. I can still play the two tracks “Aqualung” and “Locomotion Breath” but no other track in that set, nor any other track in any of my music sets (in three libraries) will play. It now seems that PLEX is hopelessly stuck.

Please note that all other media types in my PLEX installation work properly, including videos, movies and photos.

Also, please note that this failure only effects my attempts to play music/audio tracks on my Sony TV with the Android Plex Player app. I can access any and all audio tracks on my PLEX Media app on my streaming PC. I can play any and all tracks on my iPad. I can play any and all tracks on my TCL Roku TV.

Everything is working fine on every other device or platform. It is only with this Android PLEX app on my Sony TV that a problem occurs.

Clearly, either my installation of this Android PLEX app on this Sony TV is corrupted, or the Android app is just not working properly. I note that at least one other person in this thread is reporting similar problems.

Does anyone else reading this have PLEX installed on an Android TV? Is it performing well, or is it subject to the same errors.

PLEX advisors . . . what do you advise that I do?

It seems the only way to reset PLEX when it gets stuck on an audio track is to unplug my Sony TV. That normalizes things . . . until I try another audio track. Then it jacknifes again.

Any suggestions?

Hello, I am hoping to learn something about this problem that I am having with the PLEX Player installed on my Sony X900H 4K television. The problem is that I cannot play any more than a few audio tracks without PLEX locking up, or error messages flashing up on screen, or PLEX just crashing. In order to reset PLEX I must unplug the TV. But this is not fixing the problem, it only resets things temporarily until I try again to play music audios. All other media types are playing fine.

Is this a flaw in the Android PLEX Player?

Is my installation of PLEX on this TV somehow corrupted?

Is anyone else experiencing the problem?

Does anyone have insight into this problem?

Please advise. Thank you.

Am I the only person experiencing problems with my audio libraries in the PLEX Player for Android? If so, I must have a corruption installation.

Is there anything special that I need to do to uninstall it in order to get a clean reinstall?

Help, please.

I cannot even play a single album from my Music libraries. I just started an album and PLEX played 3 of 6 tracks then locked up. After that I get an error message.

This Android PLEX Player is not working . . . at least not on my Sony X900H television.

I am confused . . .why is nobody responding to my report? PLEX support has always so good in the past. I would like to know what PLEX experts think is the problem, but my questions seem to be falling on deaf ears.

Is PLEX able to duplicate my problem? Are you working on a fix?

Please help!

Eureka! (Or so I think.)

I believe that I have found the cause of my problem with audio tracks not playing without PLEX Player for Android locking up and crashing.

Since I have been having this problem, I have been trying to play some new downloaded tracks I recently purchased on-line from 7 Digital. All these tracks are “high-resolution” files, recorded in 24/96 format. It would seem that some aspect of the PLEX Player for Android (at least on my Sony X900H TV) cannot handle these “high-res” files. These files are not only 24/96 format, they have been compressed as much as 55% by someone along the line. I am not sure whether it is the large file that PLEX-Android cannot handle . . . or whether PLEX is having difficulty dealing with the 24/96 format . . . or whether it is the file decompression process that PLEX cannot handle effectively.

All I know is that this came to mind in the middle of the night. So this morning, I unplugged my Sony TV to reset it, then opened PLEX choosing only to play normal audio tracks. It seemed that I had no problems playing these files at all, or moving from one set to another. These normal audio tracks are all RIPs from CDs in “uncompressed” FLAC format. They are approximately half the size of the 24/96 compressed FLACs.

I have not fixed the problem, but at least I believe that I have isolated the problem. Would I like to be able to play these 24/96 files? Yes. But it would be up to the PLEX engineers to figure that one out.

It is now 20 days since I posted this question. Only 1 person followed up, and nobody has provided a solution.

I thought I had discovered the problem was related to my playing high-res audio files. My PLEX player installed on my Sony X900H was working properly for the past few days, but now it is jack-knifing again. This time with normal 16/44 files. It seems PLEX is wholly unreliable for playing music.

Would someone please answer my question? Do I need to uninstall the Android PLEX Player from my TV?

PLEX expertts are so quick on all my other questions. Problems with Android have been reported by others, but they seem to go unanswered.

I have not been able to resolve this apparent problem with the Android Plex Player. But I found a workaround by connecting a Roku Ultra to my Marantz AVR. By this, I am not using the Sony 4K TV as the receiver of content, but merely as a playback device. The Roku interface does not have this problem with high-res audio files. In addition, I can now use the Roku remote to select content AND control volume too.

I have a playback issues with the X900h as well. I have mostly hi-res FLAC files. They will play along just fine, then randomly stop playback with an error message. Sometimes I can play several albums over several days without a problem, sometimes I can’t even get through one. Only a reboot of the TV fixes the issue. Until the next time that it happens. Going to try and uninstall Plex app and reinstall.

Thanks for confirming the problem is not just my imagination. My resolution was to connect a Roku Ultra to the Sony X900h, and use it to source my PLEX (and other) content instead of the Android app.

All is well, though I would rather use the Android app.

I’ve noticed that the X900h’s internal Plwx app will randomly stop playback on some hi-res FLAC files. I can’t figure out why b/c it seems random and doesn’t always occur. But when it does, it requires a reboot of the TV to get it working again.
