hello all. I have a wd mycloud as a nas server but it doesnt transcode well. it says the cpu isn’t strong enough I guess. what kind of files should I convert these mkv files so it doesnt have this issue?
There’s no straightforward answer to your question.
This very much depends on what clients/devices you’re using to playback your videos.
Factors are:
- container format (mkv, mp4, divx, avi, mov…)
- video codec (e.g. h.264, h.265…), size (4K, 1080p…), max/average bitrate
- audio codec (e.g. DTS, Dolby/AC3, AAC, MP3…), # of channels, max/average bitrate
- subtitle format (e.g. text based SRTs vs. image based PGS/VOBSUB from discs)
That being said…
- Most clients are actually playing ok with both mp4/m4v or mkv files.
- Also… audio transcoding isn’t as demanding as video/subtitle transcoding and should also be ok on your MyCloud.
- if you want to avoid that too, your best shot should be AC3 (Dolby Surround etc.) for surround audio tracks or AAC for stereo tracks
- While h.265 videos are on the rise, there’s still a lot of varying limitations on various players – if you plan to transcode, your best shot for now might be h.264
- Subtitles are dangerous… many players cannot deal with image based subtitles as derived from disc based rips. If the client cannot deal with them, Plex will try to burn the subtitles into the video (=re-encoding the video, no matter the quality)
- you could look into the new on-demand subtitles feature to avoid any issues with subtitle-induced transcoding
You can use apps like Handbrake to optimize/transcode your videos. The app includes a bunch of presets for specific devices (e.g. certain phones / set-top-boxes).
