N100 struggle as soon as I enable PGS subtitles. no subtitle hw transcoding?

Version1.41.0.8992
On tautulli It shows almost 4.0 speed on a 4k transcode and runs very well. However, as soon as I enable PGS subtitles it goes down to 0.6 and freezes, with the “server not powerfull enough” message.
I bought the plex pass with all the talk that subtitle hardware acceleration is available and all very optimized and fast, and now i’m feeling very disappointed about this false advertisement. All i’m looking for is a simple transcode with pgs subtitle…

PGS (and other subtitle formats) will drop hardware acceleration and you will be entirely dependent on CPU at that point. Thus, the N100 will struggle with a 4k transcode with no GPU acceleration. This is expected at this time.

Idk if it is working better on windows but they made tweaks in recent release to help with subtitle issues. Maybe windows is coming. If you were running Linux on that the pgs subtitle issue isnt and issue anymore. Chuckpa has posted about what’s being done about it. But again windows may still being worked on.

“well no more because now with a plex pass when plex needs to burn image based subtitles it will do so with hardware acceleration”.

I’m on windows plex media server.
My client is an Iphone.

No subtitles, normal hardware transcoding

Enabling PGS subtitles is fine at first, but as soon as a character starts talking, the video freezes.

Subtitles enabled, characters talking

@andreww4Real can you please post your logs of playback with PGS subtitles?

Is that a PlexPass feature? I don’t see that you have a PlexPass flair on your forum user.

*Edit: to be clear I know you said you bought it, I just don’t see confirmation here.

Hey I also have this this issue on an N100 & Plex 1.41.0.8992 but with Docker on Ubuntu 24.04.1

HW Transcoding fails with PGS subtitles burn in and falls back to CPU only. The strange thing is VOSUB another picture-based subtitle format is correctly using HW Transcoding perfectly including Tone Mapping. Is there a way to privately send the complete logs? as they contain my public ip.
