Name of episode and summary text for TV shows - not consistent: sometimes works, sometimes not

Yes, I am looking at the show page and not a season or an episode page. The Cast list seem to only appear at the show page in my Plex server (I have never seen a cast list on a season or an episode page). When I enter a show/TV series the poster appaer in the top to the left of the TV series name, year and summary. Below the poster I can see the seasons and below the seasons the Cast list appaer.

I have now checked more than 20 TV series on my Plex server and all of them have a Cast list. So did this Korean TV series until I entered the episode names and summaries manually. I do not know enough about Plex to have any clue about why?

I did “perform the Plex Dance” one more time and my manual entries of episode names and summaries did of course disappaer but without the Cast list appaering again.

BTW I did not manage to find/open the XML file for this TV show.

The last attempt (so far) was to perform a FIX MATCH > AUTO MATCH and select spesifically TheTVDB and refresh Metadata, but “no cigar”. “Just in case” I also did the same and selecting The Movie Database and refreshing Metadata. No Cast list and the only difference between the two databases was a different Poster photo. As I have mentioned previously both these databases do have a Cast list (names and photos) for this TV series. So why do not the cast list appaer?

Edit your tv show library,
go to the Advanced tab
What is selected as Scanner and Agent on there?

When I started this “mission impossible” my TV show library was:

Scanner: Plex TV series
Agent: Plex Series

After the problem with no Cast when I manually entered episode names and summeries
I tried to change Agent to TheTVDB but then I could not save changes unless I also changed Scanner to Plex series scanner. So I changed both to be able to save changes. After fix match and refresh metadata on only this TV series I suddely got Korean language on this TV series
but still no Cast list.

So I changed back to:
Scanner: Plex TV series
Agent: Plex Series

Don’t flip willy-nilly between legacy agents and the modern one. Doing so can leave your library in an unusable state.
The legacy agents are no longer maintained and will go away pretty soon.

Perform “Unmatch”, followed by “Match” on the show level.

I expect thats a very good advise and luckily so far it seems like my TV series library has not become unstable

Changed back yesterday evening to:
Scanner: Plex TV series
Agent: Plex Series

and performing unmatch, match and the refresh metadata did bring back english language. However still no sign of the cast list.

I did check the two other Korean TV shows that I not long ago added on my Plex server with over 20 other TV series:

  • Vagabond
  • Vincenzo
They both have correct Show poster, summary and CAST LIST but no episode names or summaries just like the third Korean series had initially. After I entered episode names or summaries manually the Cast list disappared so I do now not dare to enter episode names or summaries manually on Vagabond or Vincenzo.

Is it possible to do anything manually in Plex with the cast list for This only one TV series? I could perhaps do an experiment by adding cast list manually?

No. That is fully dependent on the cast list being available on one of the supported metadata online sources. (Preferably TheMovieDB)

If you have mp4 files, it might be possible to embed meta tags with the names of the cast, but no photos.

Thanks, so should I put a reference to TheMovieDB somewhere in the Plex TV series Library?

No. It is sufficient to match the series using the new agent. Then select the appropriate Episode Ordering in the properties of the show.
If https://watch.plex.tv/ has a cast list, your Plex server will automatically download it.

But as I mentioned above, it can only do so if the cast has already been added to the metadata sources it uses. If the cast is not on TMDB, TVDB, or IMDb, it won’t be in Plex either.
And newly added metadata on these sites take a few days before they arrive in Plex.

If you want to add cast manually, I recommend you to create a user account on TheMovieDB.org and add them there. That way many people can benefit. And not just Plex users, either.

New agent? Anything I need to select/configure or is it always active/included?

I have been using TheTVDB, should I use The Movie Database instead?

Although I find the Korean TV series “Vagabond” at https://watch.plex.tv/ I do not find the Korean TV series “She would never know” there. So a cast list would need to come from another database.

As mentioned it is not on https://watch.plex.tv/ but this TV series with a Cast lists is BOTH on The Movie Database and TheTVDB so then I do not understand why it does not show up in my Plex server

Use whichever suits the season and episode numbering of your files best.

Scanner: Plex TV series
Agent: Plex Series

That’s the new agent.

It won’t. If you can’t find it on https://watch.plex.tv/ then it won’t get any metadata in Plex server either.

Then your most promising strategy would be to add it there.

Once again, thank you for your helpfull comments

Understood
however, “should” it be in Plex if this particular TV series with name, year, summary and even CAST is available in both TVDB and TMDB?

So I can simply add the TV series information found both TVDB and TMDB to https://watch.plex.tv/ ?

Normally, yes. It can happen that a few factors conspire to prevent it.
Common reasons are

  • the series is considered a duplicate of a similarly titled show. Often an issue with localized versions of a show, or when additional seasons get produced later. Sometimes websites are treating them as separate shows, and sometimes simply as a new season of an existing show.
  • all of the metadata websites that Plex is using are allowing to add links to other websites. You can find e.g. on TheTVDB links to the same show listed on IMDb or TheMovieDB. If someone is making a mistake there and is putting in wrong links, Plex will sometimes merge different shows.

No, I specifically meant to add information about shows which are missing from TheMovieDB to that website.

Hurray
I managed to get the cast list with names and photos visible under this “slightly problematic” TV series.

HOW?
putting the TheTVDB.com Series ID in inside curly brace at the end of the name of this specific TV Series folder. I found the tip inside: Support Articles Naming and Organizing Your TV Show Files. “If you are using the “Plex TV Series” agent, you can optionally include the TMDB or TVDB show ID in the folder name to improve matching.”
