Naming convention for half-episodes?

Hello,

I have an anime series that contains a number of 'half episodes' which serve as catch up episodes. Is there some way to name an episode as a half-episode and for PMS to understand this?

Example:

NANA - s01e20.mkv

NANA - s01e21.mkv

NANA - s01e21.5.mkv

NANA - s01e22.mkv

NANA - s01e23.mkv

Thanks in advance!

Aaron

That's a new one.  Never heard of half episodes.  Remember that Plex relies on TheTVDB or some other source to match up shows.  Looks like they have that episode listed as a special, so you are going to have to list it in the special folder if you want the metadata to match up.  If you don't care about the metadata, you can either:

1 - Leave it as is.  Plex will think it is different resolutions of episode 21, and should give you the option of which to watch.  You'll probably just get 2 of the same options, but they will play the different files.

2 - Give it some other episode number outside of valid episodes.  For example, 215 to represent 21.5.  They'll show up at the end of the list but will show as their own episode.

I did do a test and both options work.

I think you're looking for Naming 'Stacked' TV Show Episodes

No, I don't think that is what he wants.  The episode he wants to list is an actual stand alone episode not 1/2 of an episode.  Almost like an extra on a dvd.

He could treat the file as a stacked episode but then it won't show that this episode exists, it would just become part of another episode.

That series is listed in thetvdb: NANA, and you have to use the Specials organization for it to be recognized in Plex:

Example

Original File Name:

NANA - s01e21.5.mkv3

Proper File Name:

NANA - S00E02 - Episode 21.5_ Junko's Room 2.mkv

You can leave it in the root of the shows folder, or put it into a 'Specials' folder withing the show folder; Personal Preference, Plex should not care.

I'm having an issue that's kinda inline with this... but the opposite. Hah.

I have a series that's made up of several double episodes which are in a single file. Unfortunately TVDB has these double episodes listed as 2 separate entries so Plex will instead apply the metadata for the first half to the double episode file, and then the data for the second half in the following episode which then causes a chain reaction for each subsequent episode in that season to be off by one. I've tried manually changing them but even after locking the data fields they still revert back to their incorrect state.

If you have the files named properly this shouldn't happen.  For example use:

Show name - S01E01-E02 - Episode 1 and Episode 2.mp4

Show name - S01E03-E04 - Episode 3 and Episode 4.mp4

Even though you have 2 files, Plex will show these as 4 episodes.  Unfortunately, playing either episode 1 or episode 2 will play both episodes since they are still 1 file.  Same with 3 and 4 and every other file that is double.  Workaround is to just name it the first episode and ignore the second part and just know that they have 2 episodes.  For example:

Show name - S01E01 - Episode 1 and Episode 2.mp4

Show name - S01E03 - Episode 3 and Episode 4.mp4

This will let you know when you look at the files, but Plex will only show every other episode, but will show the correct info for that first episode.

Thanks heaps for the info (and the quick response). I'll give this a try tomorrow.

I can confirm this issue with at least 2 separate TV shows, and the "fix" is as MovieFan suggested: rename the files to reflect only the first half of the 2 parter. I will add though, for file organization and future reference, you should drop a txt file for each double that you rename:

[Show name - S01E01-E02.mp4] has text file [Show name - S01E01-E02.txt], and then the media file is renamed to [Show name - S01E01.mp4]

This did not used to be an issue with PMS libraries, but I don't usually have doubles like this, so I can not say for sure when the change in the agent/scanner took effect to cause this.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure possui uma temporada com 3 episódios assim:
season s03 golden wind

s03e12.mp4
s03e13.mp4
s03e13.5.mp4
s03e14.mp4

s03e20.mp4
s03e21.mp4
s03e21.5.mp4
s03e22.mp4

s03e27.mp4
s03e28.mp4
s03e28.5.mp4
s03e29.mp4

Absolutely not.

same as above… those episodes are listed as “specials” in TheTVDb.com
https://www.thetvdb.com/series/jojos-bizarre-adventure-2012/seasons/official/0

s00e03 → JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5 - Golden Wind Recap 13.5: Inizio del vento aureo
s00e04 → JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5 - Golden Wind Recap 21.5: determinazione
s00e05 → JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5 - Golden Wind Recap 28.5: destino

Make sure to name the episodes properly – considering there’s a lot of listings for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, I recommend to add the year in the folder/episode names!
e.g.

TV Shows
  JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (2012)
