Plex giving movies old movie titles even after I change them

For instance, the original file is called “The.Two.Jakes.1990.1080p.WEBRip.x264.”

I change it to “The Two Jakes (1990),” and add it to the Library folder.

When I see it in my PLEX HOME, it has the original title “The.Two.Jakes.1990.1080p.WEBRip.x264.”

Server Version#: Version 1.15.6.1079
Player Version#: Version 3.95.2

Are they mp4 or m4v files?

(Plex Home is something else. not related to metadata)

Thanks.

All MP4 files—this is a new development.

Just started happening recently, although I have been using Plex for several years.

Also for some reason, my movies are not starting from where I left off even I clicks “Resume from…xx:xx.”

Weird…

Possibly a metadata issue. The movie title/name is possibly set to “The.Two.Jakes.1990.1080p.WEBRip.x264.”

Load the file into Subler, https://subler.org/. Subler is a nice tool for muxing tracks in/out of MP4s. It also has the ability to manually edit and download metadata for movies & tv shows. Mac only. MP4/M4v only. When you’ve finished with the edits, be sure to Optimize the file. This re-arranges some bits for better streaming. See the FAQ for details.

You might need to Plex Dance the file after making the changes.

Also:

A) Check the scanning agent on the movie library. Edit the library, choose Advanced. Set agent to Plex Movie.

B) Check the order of your movie agents in Settings -> Agents -> Movies -> Plex Movie and -> The Movie Database. Move ‘Local Media Assets (Movies)’ below ‘Plex Movie.’ Edit ‘Plex Movie’ agent to reflect desired choices for ratings, etc. Cast List Source must be set to The Movie Database to download actor pics.

C) Refresh All Metadata for the library to have the changes take affect.

The above three items have Plex check online databases before using the metadata in the file.

Another helpful trick is to remove the ‘Title’ and ‘Comments’ tags from the .mp4 file using windows explorer. (File Manager on Win10).

  1. Simply select the file or multiple files in Windows Explorer (File Manager).

  2. In the DETAILS Pane (turn it on, if it’s not already), right-click and select ‘Remove properties…’

  3. At the top of the window select ‘Remove the following properties from the file:’

  4. Select the ‘TITLE’ and ‘COMMENTS’ fields and click ‘OK’

That will remove the metatags and should fix most of the files that cause that issue and can be used to fix hundreds of files at a time too!

Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

Afterwards, Refresh Metadata on affected items.

LOL! Windows users think everybody is on “The Dark Side.” I use a Mac, but thanks anyway!

Thanks—this helped.
