Naming issues.....major!

HI,

I have been a Plex Pass members for several years and all was working smoothly until i had to change my server from an old Mac Mini, on which I couldn’t update the software, to a MacBook Pro and iMac. Both are fine in terms of all aspects except all my media files for TV are no longer recognised appropriately.

I have had a tinker at renaming some after looking at similar questions and answers but nothing is working. Almost all my TV shows are now recognised as the show “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” no matter what I do.

I would value any feedback on how I remedy this?

Many thanks in anticipation

At which folder did you point your tv show library?
(Edit your library, go to the ‘Add Folders’ tab to find out)

Then provide an example how your files are named and how they are organized into folders and subfolders.
Both are very important for the correct matching of tv shows.

Thanks

I have attached a screenshot of an example of the naming on my Media Centre drive. Hope that helps.

ouch…
you definitely need to fix this for Plex to recognize it.
structure and naming should be like this:

TV Shows ← the library linked to this folder
.. / Father Ted (1995) ← the year the show first aired isn’t mandatory but it’ll help to avoid confusion
.. .. / Season 01 ← Season, not Series!! also… use a 2-digit season number
.. .. .. Father Ted (1995) - s01e01.m4v ← no space in between the sXXeYY section
.. .. .. Father Ted (1995) - s01e02.m4v
.. .. .. Father Ted (1995) - s01e03.m4v
.. .. .. Father Ted (1995) - s01e04.m4v
.. .. .. Father Ted (1995) - s01e05.m4v
.. .. .. Father Ted (1995) - s01e06.m4v
.. .. / Season 02
.. .. .. Father Ted (1995) - s02e01.m4v
.. .. .. ...

Edit: added one more remark

Yep…

  • Tip!: Be sure to use the English word “Season” as noted above, even if your content is in another language.

I have tried this with absolutely no effect at all. There is a folder on Plex called “TV Programmes” which shows all the shows as they were originally but if I click on any there is no content. The “TV shows” folder links content to my Media Centre but just labels them completely wrong. So to use it I’m having to rummage through the files to find something I want to watch which is ridiculous really.

What I can’t understand is this was all working perfectly well until I had to move to a different server from an old Mac Mini which I had to make redundant as I couldn’t update the software.

Any further help would be appreciated.

Best wishes

Mark

try this:

  1. take the entire “Father Ted” folder and move it outside the “TV Shows” folder
  2. within Plex… go to the start page, hover over the tv show library (TV Programmes?) and click ... > Scan Library Files… wait for it to complete --> expected result: the Father Ted Show is gone from Plex
  3. on the library header level, click ... > Empty Trash
  4. on the library header level, click ... > Clear Caches
  5. move the “Father Ted” folder back in your “TV Shows” folder
  6. within Plex… re-do the ... > San Library Files --> expected result: the Father Ted show is added and Plex looks for the metadata.

Hi Tom,

None of that worked and in desperation I deleted the folder and then tried to link the old TV shows folder that had all the graphics and show titles in place from before but was not linking to the media hard drive. It worked this time and I have links to the correct files on the media server and the shows are playing.

I really do not know what was happening here but all is well now.

Thanks very much for your time.

Regards

Mark
