Windows 10, Firefox Browser, Plex Version 4.43.4
I just don’t understand whats happening. I thought I fixed my problems of T.V. and Movies all mixed in together by moving T.V. series on my p.c. out of videos and into documents. That helped a lot. I have T.V. series completely separate on my P.C. When I add to a series, Plex wants to separate it from the rest of the shows in a series. I’ve tried re-naming things differently, I’ve tried making collections,
Looks like bad naming.
TV Shows should be named like this:
TV Shows <- the folder linked to your tv-show library
Show Name
Season XX
Show Name - sXXeYY - optional stuff such as episode titles.ext
Show Name - sXXeYY.ext <- without the optional stuff that will be ignored by Plex anyway
Where XX is the season and YY is the episode number. .ext is the respective file extension.
Show names should match how the show is listed on TheTVDb.com – mostly that’s just the names, if the show is a reboot it might need the year in brackets as well.
After correcting names you might need to perform a Plex Dance to make Plex forget it already associated that show.
Examples:
TV Shows <- the folder linked to your tv-show library
Perry Mason (2020) <- as listed on TheTVDb.com!
Season 01
Perry Mason (2020) - s01e01 - Chapter 1.ext
Perry Mason (2020) - s01e02 - Chapter 2.ext
...
Perry Mason (2020) - s01e08 - Chapter 8.ext
Pennyworth
Season 01
Pennyworth - s01e01 - Pilot.ext
Pennyworth - s01e02 - The Landlord's Daughter.ext
...
Pennyworth - s01e10 - Marianne Faithful.ext
Warrior (2019)
Season 01
Warrior (2019) - s01e01 - The Itchy Onion.ext
Warrior (2019) - s01e02 - There's No China in the Bible.ext
...
Warrior (2019) - s01e10 - If You're Going to Bow, Bow Low.ext
Season 02
Warrior (2019) - s02e01 - Learn to Endure, or Hire a Bodyguard.ext
Warrior (2019) - s02e02.ext
...
Warrior (2019) - s02e10.ext
The Mandalorian
Season 01
The Mandalorian - s01e01.ext
The Mandalorian - s01e02.ext
...
The Mandalorian - s01e08.ext
Season 02
The Mandalorian - s02e01.ext
The Mandalorian - s02e02.ext
...
The Mandalorian - s02e08.ext
Star Trek Discovery <- most OS don't like special characters like ":"; drop them for best results!
Season 01
Star Trek Discovery - s01e01.ext
Star Trek Discovery - s01e02.ext
...
Star Trek Discovery - s01e15.ext
...
Season 03
Star Trek Discovery - s03e01.ext
Star Trek Discovery - s03e02.ext
...
Star Trek Discovery - s03e13.ext
Side notes
You can see the shows didn’t properly match based on the names showing in Plex (e.g. Warrior 2019 ... vs. Warrior 2020...), with each of them consisting of a single season… in particular with some not showing a release date (when sorted by release date)
The orange number badges on each poster indicate the number of unwatched episodes – not the total number of episodes
Thanks for the help so far here’s a shot of how I have things named on my p.c. at the moment. I guess I have to go back and change things. Can you please show me what they should look like as opposed to how I have them. Pennyworth is now missing as are a few other things, I’m just going to re-do those anyway. Once again, Thank You
As an Addition (and for your personal sanity with regards to your folder structure):
Go into the Plex server settings
Disable/uncheck Settings > [Server Name] > Library > Automatically Empty Trash When Updating the Library and automatic Library Updates (at least temporarily)
Create a subfolder Movies in My Videos
Move the current content of My Videos into My Videos\Movies
Go back to the Plex start/home page, hover over the Movies library and click ... > Manage Library > Edit...
Go to the Add Folder tab
Change the folder linked to this library to My Videos\Movies (make sure you don’t end up with 2 entries for My Videos and My Videos\Movies)
When you apply this change, Plex will rescan the library based on its new location… because of the changes we’ve made in #2, it will not throw away your current configuration and instead just point all records to their new location
When you’re done with steps 1-8 you can create another subfolder in My Videos and call it TV Shows. In that folder you create the subfolder structure described in my first response (e.g. My Videos\TV Shows\Perry Mason (2020)\Season 01\). You can then move the individual episode files from their current location (My Documents) into their respective target folders (1 folder per show, 1 folder per season in each show‘s folder, all episode files of a show/season in that folder). Finally you can point the TV show library in Plex to that new folder (My Videos\TV Shows\)… that should also fix your matching problem
Between the above 2 answers, I think I finally have it straight. You both taught me how to separate and re-name everything and my Plex finally looks neat and tidy. Hopefully I won’t have any more problems. I would have never figured it all out for myself. All that re-naming was a real pain, but now I know how to do it as new things are added. All I have left to do is re-place a few movie posters that got lost in the shuffle, no big deal. I had lots of movies, but luckily didn’t have to re-name all of those, they came back just fine. I now have a folder for single t.v. shows, one for t.v. series, one for 3D movies and the big one for movies. All in in sub-folders, under videos. All t.v. series are all in sub- folders under videos-T.V. series and each series has it’s own folder. As long as I view things under libraries, and not recommended, It’s all nice and neat. Thank You both again, and have a great holiday season.
So, everything is working well now. I found a FREE app called “Re-Name my TV Series” Since my problems were with t.v. series and single t.v. shows, this works quite well. Now 6 bucks for filebot is quite reasonable, I just didn’t have enough to go on from the trial version. Re-name my tv series is quite easy to use (even for me). If anyone wants to check it out, here’s the link I used.https://www.tweaking4all.com/home-theatre/rename-my-tv-series-v2/
