No matter how I name them, not a single part of a tv serie, from dvd, is shown in Plex

Yes, I read all the naming things from the not helping Plex guys, nothing helped. I tried every different version of naming I could find on the net. Nothing. Not single part of a series is shown in Plex, very bad. With films, no problem most of the times.

Would be great to get help, the Plex guys take the money, but don’t help.

Can you post the full path(s) to a couple episodes that won’t get recognized? “Every different version of naming I could find” doesn’t really help us, since we don’t know what you found.

If you did follow Plex’s recommended /RootFolder/ShowName (year)/Season xx/ShowName (year) - SxxEyy naming, make sure you added the right path to your library (RootFolder in my example, under Manage Library > Edit > Add folders), and that it’s a TV Show library, not a movie library.

So… how did you name them?
I assume you’ve added the files to a separate tv-show type library?
Have you verified the Plex Media Server on your Syno has access to the files (this will depend on what version of DSM your Syno is running)? → Synology FAQ - Questions, Answers, and How-To's - #25 by ChuckPa

Hi Tom,
first thank you for your fast answer. First I put the files in my usual folders. Because nothing helped, I read in the internet, that I should make a TV folder first. So I did this. Now I have a TV folder and then I put my files there, with different naming.
e.g.
True Detective (2014) - s01e06
s01e07 - True Detective (2014)
Tru Detect s01e08
Then I read, that I put them in a folder in my TV folder, so I did this.
Felder “Fargo 2 2015” and inside
Fargo 2 (2015) - s02e02 - 1996
Fargo 2 - s02e02

The really strange thing for me with Plex is, that it doesn’t even show me the files at all. Ok, maybe it could not play them because of codecs of whatever, but not even showing that there are some?!

Thanks and regards
alex

You need a Plex library of the type “TV shows”.
The rest is described here: https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-tv-show-files/

This is the definitive naming guide. Don’t use some other source on the Internet.

There might be some misunderstandings in what is being expressed and what is being assumed so being simple and clear - even if it sounds “too simple” - might help out here and personally I like screenshots to help in those cases.

Can you provide a screenshot or two of the files as they are on the server - like the folders and naming?
For example, here’s mine for Buffy:

You can see enough detail to see the full path, folders and episodes.

Can you provide a screenshot or two of how you have your TV Library setup in Plex?
I get to it usually via the three dots on the Library in Plex home:

Here’s showing library type in Plex:

Here’s showing the mapped folders:

You can see the mapped folder matches my screenshot of my files.

If Plex isn’t matching TV shows it’s usually just a setting missing somewhere and screenshots can help a lot with sorting out that gap.

Edit: just re-reading a bit of your notes again and it does seem your naming expectations aren’t quite right or your examples are confusing for how you’re naming things so those screenshots will be ideal. You may be getting Movie and TV Show file organization mixed together so make sure you have TV files organized like this: Some TV Show Folder Name->Some TV Series Name->Season ##->Some TV Series Name S##E##

“Some TV Show Folder” should be what you have mapped to your Plex TV Show Library.
You can get away with some things in the naming (like you don’t always need a year, but it helps) and you don’t always need ALL the words in the name and the punctuation between words doesn’t usually matter but… best to err on the side of best practices when you are having problems.

Hi Insomnic,
sorry, that it took so long for my reply. I hope you still want to help me.
So you say screenshots would be better? Ok, that is a good idea.
Here are the screenshots you may need.

Hope you can help me. Obviously the Plex guys won’t do anything for me.

You have been pointed to the relevant naming guides 3 times already.
Your screenshots are telling that you are still ignoring them.

As others have mentioned several times, you must follow Plex naming and organization requirements.

Specific examples based on your screenshots:

/volume1/Serien WP <-- folder added to TV Show library
  /True Detective (2014) <-- ShowName (IntroYear)
    /Season 01 <-- "Season" in English
      /True Detective (2014) s01e01.mkv
  /Fargo (2014)
    /Season 02
      /Fargo (2014) s02e01.mkv <-- ShowName (IntroYear) sXXeYY
      /Fargo (2014) s02e02 Before the Law.mkv <-- episode name optional

Yo!

FordGuy61 has put together a really good example for you for next steps to get the the identification working better. You have “Serien WP” added to your library which is just fine but individual TV series have to be in their own folder and specific seasons for that series in a folder within that series.

There is some wiggle room on the naming, but it’s best to keep it straight forward and particularly when getting started with it you should follow the best practices. The episodes themselves can actually have quite a bit of extra “stuff” in them (the guides linked above cover some of that) but it’s best to at least have SHOWNAME S01E01 at the start of the filename.

Even if you don’t stick with Plex, the other media center software like Jellyfin and Emby and Infuse and such follow pretty much the same filenaming and organization so even if you decide not to stick with Plex you’ll still be in good shape.

Hi FordGuy61,
thx for your help. I tried to make everything as you said, nothing went to the better. I, again, send you the screenshots that you can see it yourself.
Any other idea?
Thanks and regards
Alex

No, you did not. “Fargo 2 (2015)” is wrong. “Tru.Detect” is wrong.

Rename all the folders and files following the Plex documentation or the example in my earlier post.

Then Plex Dance the show, to clear the old names/matches from the Plex database.

Do I understand you right, that if I put “wrong named” files inside the right folders, Plex still don’t find any? Not even right named ones?!

So I now deleted everything else from the folder but True Detective, as you see in the screenshot. What is still wrong?

Now configure folder/file permissions so Plex can see the files.

With DSM 6, the user Plex must have at least read only permission to the media files.
With DSM 7, the user PlexMediaServer must have at least read only permission to the media files.

I’m writing this for DSM 7. Adjust for DSM 6 if needed.

Please follow the procedure even if the file permissions already seem correct.

  1. Login to Synology DSM. Username must have administrative rights.

  2. Control Panel → Shared Folder

  3. Edit the Serien WP shared folder.

  4. Select Permissions tab.

  5. Change Local Users to System Internal User (Not applicable for DSM 6).

  6. Select user PlexMediaServer (If DSM 6, select user Plex).

  7. Check the box for Custom permissions.
    This opens the Permissions Editor.

  8. For Read-Only, select all the Read permissions.
For Read-Write, select all Read & Write permissions.
    Administration permissions are not needed.
    Click Done.
    permissions editor

9. IMPORTANT

You will be back at the Edit Shared Folder window.
Check the box to “Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files.” and Save.
DSM will then update the permissions for all folders and files in Serien WP.

  1. If another Edit Shared Folders window is open, Save to close it.
    Close the Control Panel.

  2. Plex should now have permissions to see the files in Serien WP.
Rescan the library to pick up your media files.

If Plex still does not see your media files, please do the following:

  1. Configure Plex for debug, not verbose, level server logs.
    Settings → Server_Name → General + Show Advanced

  2. In Settings → Library, enable Scan my library automatically.

  3. Stop Plex Media Server. Wait one minute.

  4. Start Plex Media Server. Wait three minutes for Plex to start and log the everything.

  5. Scan the TV show library.

  6. When the scan is finished, pull the server log files (Settings → Troubleshooting) and upload them to the thread. Drag the ZIP file into the message window. It will insert at the cursor location.

First, thank you very much for your work man, FordGuy61. I did everything you wrote, double and triple checked it, nothing changed. I was shortly before to do the debug thing, than I saw, that there was a new Plex update. 1.40.3.8555 So I did this first and voila, the series “appeared”?! I have no clue, what did the change.
Ok, the Plex shows all parts wrong with the last True Detective with Jodie Foster, so it still gives a ■■■■ on naming the folder “Season 1”, but at least it seems to work finally.

IMHO it’s really bad, that it is so many times so difficult to find out, what hinders to see the files. This could be massively improved, in my eyes.
So I hope, now my other series will also work.
So again, thank you very much.

Glad the system is finally seeing your files.

What is incorrect with True Detective?

That is the Season 1 poster from both TMDB and TVDB.

The episode names on my system match those on both TMDB & TVDB.

td

As you can see on your screenshot, up there is the “blue” picture of the current or last season of True Detective, with Jodie Foster. But at the Episodes down there, there is no Jodie, but Harrelson and McConaughey, but not the photo from season 1?!

I added only four episodes of the show, all from season 1.

Edit the library → Advanced → Seasons = Hide for single season series

Hi,
I just want to say thank you again for all your help. Still not everything makes sense in Plesk and not everything is, IMHO, made easy. I think in a few areas they should make it much better and easier to use.
All the best
