NAs for plex

I really want to buy a NAS for two things one PLEX and the other backup pictures etc.

the price point has got me stuck. I didn’t want to spend more then 500 dollars including two 6tb drives. I realize that can’t happen.

  1. asustor as3204T problem cant upgrade the memory (not sure if that would be needed)
  2. Qnap ts451 daul core (not sure if transcoding can be done by this unit.
  3. Synology any mode
  4. DIY

Can anybody suggest a solid 4 bay NAS that wont break the bank and do transcoding or if I can I configure the NAS to be a PLEX survey but use my pc for transcoding specific type of files like 4k

thank you so much

Yeah you’re going to spend almost that much on hard drives alone.

Go with FreeNAS. Slickdeals has a deal on the Dell T30 right now. Add another 8GB of memory to this and your 2 6TB drives in a mirror and you’re gtg.

Dell T30 - $350
8GB memory - $62
2-6TB WD Red drives - $440
Total - $852

Sweet deal, but it comes up at $629 here when I click on the link. OK, I see the coupon code.

I don’t like the look of that thing plus with plex not able to wake on lan that thing would run all the time.

I am leaning towards the asustor just want to make sure 2 gig of ram is good?

IF you are talking simply NAS devices to store video files, NOT an NAS that has PLEX built in, Amazon has some great prices on Synlogy and QNap’s that are just that, NAS devices.

Search these forums for NAS and plex - many many posts with the same topic.

Here is a thought buy the best and biggest NAS you can afford and put in any drives you have or are cheap.

Then later when u have money buy bigger drives.

Or wait for 6 months and make your budget $1000 !
