Native Dolby Vision and Atmos support on Plex

Yes, provided the device supports the combination of codecs, profiles, and containers. However, the support does vary from device to device, and while I’ve seen technical spec sheets for the standalone Roku boxes with details on wha they support, I’ve not yet seen any for those TVs

Thank you for your feedback on this. I have a SHIELD TV and it seems more stable in handling anything you through at it, but it seems weird how the Roku OS works. We as consumers are left in the dark when we don’t get much information on what is supported and what isn’t which isn’t good for Plex as it aims to be the service for all, but it is what it is.

There is an existing long and detailed thread on DV, I’d recommend anyone having problems or wanting to understand more, read through it and any other links provided in it.

The short answer is dv is a mess, with multiple profiles and capabilities, and most devices are not compatible with all of them.

Most, if not all, streaming devices are intended for streaming (Netflix etc) dv, not decoding 4k Blu-ray dv profiles.

Toss streaming devices general lack of truehd support, which causes transcoding/direct streaming, which in turn causes problems for dv.

Raspberry 4 support passthrough?

On the NVIDIA Shield Pro, both .mp4 and .mkv Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos rips are supported on the Plex app and play just fine.

How did you get Plex on the Shield Pro to play Dolby Vision? I just tried and it’s not working (colors all messed up). I’m using the old 2017 Shield Pro, does it require the newer Shield Pro?

You need the 2019 Shield Pro.

Dolby Vision is not supported on the older models.

As far as Atmos is concerned, the Roku devices do not work with True HD (lossless) files at all. If you have ripped your Blu Rays, they are ripped to True HD. There is no way to rip or convert them to EAC3 (lossy) files. The Nvidia Shield Pro can handle both True HD AND DTS HD lossless files. That’s part of the reason that they are so expensive. They added the extra hardware because enough of their customers asked for it.
