Need advice on NAS hard drives and a few general questions

I plan on purchasing a QNAP TVS 872XT to act as my Plex media server and uploading about 1500 DVDs and 300 Blu-ray’s. I will be purchasing a plex pass and hope to be able to stream to 3-4 clients simultaneously. I need advice on the following:

  1. Specifically, what type and what manufacture of hard drives should I purchase
  2. How many TB’s should each drive be and how many do I need. ( I will be backing up all movies so I will need drives for this)
  3. Any other software or hardware I should consider purchasing?
  4. Any advice you would give me before I begin?

Get NAS rated drives. They’re designed to run 24x7 and handle the vibration of being in an enclosure with other drives. You don’t need to get datacenter rated drives. Ones rated for home / small business users will do nicely.

I’ve used HGST for years and have never had a problem with them.
I have one Seagate IronWolf. It has been installed in my NAS for ~18 months. No problems.
Others use WD Red, which also seem very reliable.

Suggest you avoid remanufactured drives, even if they have a warranty. I picked up a couple when I bought my first NAS. They both died within 3 mos of the warranty expiring.
