A sleeping NAS needs time to spin up when accessed for media.
Plex used to wait long enough for the NAS to spin up but, recently, that stopped being the case. It times out when you try to play media until the NAS spins up.
There needs to be a configuration option so the user can extend the timeout period so that Plex works the way that it used to. This affects everyone who stores media on a NAS and has the NAS configured to sleep when not in use to save power.
edit - I removed the part about this affecting maintenance - turns out that was a config issue as one of my settings got disabled.
Just for clarification… what kind of timeframe are we talking about (seconds, minutes…)?
Also… your thread title mentions a „stream timeout“ — based on the actual description I suppose this isn’t the actual scope of the suggestion?
Hi there. The spin up time for my NAS is about 15 sec or so. The timeout seems to occur after about 5 sec (I haven’t explicitly timed it though). I saw stream timeout errors all over the log file at times when maintenance should be running (e.g. 04:00), but admittedly, I’m not sure if that timeout is the same as the timeouts that I’m experiencing.
I do not let my NAS go to sleep for this reason. It would be too difficult to explain to remote users.
Maybe a better option would be for the application to wake up the hard drives once a person accesses your Plex server in anticipation for eventual playback of content?
It depends on the setup. At one point I had 3 NASes accessed by my Plex setup, so only 1 of the 3 were used if I watched anything. Now, I’m down to 2, a SSD NAS and the HDD NAS. The HDD one sucks up a ton of expensive California power when it’s running so I have it sleep because it’s not in use like 97% of the time.
If not for my wallet, we need this option for the environment! Ha ha
