Need help adding new media to plex server remotely (Nvidia-Shield)

Hi there,

I’m having difficulty adding new media to my plex media server when I’m not on the local network. I can still access plex and play any of my movies remotely, I just can’t add any new ones. Normally, when I’m on the local network I type the IP address of the server into my search bar, type in my username and password, and transfer the files onto my Nvidia Shield, but when I try to do this remotely it says “failed to connect.”

I’m just wondering, could this be a secure connection problem or maybe a security setting on my router that’s preventing me from altering files remotely??

Any help is appreciated,
Noah

Accessing the file system of your server machine is not handled by Plex.

What you are actually doing, when you type in the IP address of your shield into the address bar of the windows file explorer, is to access a “network file share” (using the SMB/CIFS protocol).
This is enabled by the shield’s operating system, not by Plex.

To use the SMB/CIFS protocol over a remote connection is not recommended. To be blunt: It would be downright stupid to do so without additional security measures.

I see only one reasonable way: get a router with support for WireGuard or similar VPN technology.
You can use this to establish a secure channel into your home network from the outside. Your computer will then behave almost as if it were situated inside your home network.
Which means, you can then access your shield as usual.
