[Need Help}: Is Intel-i3-9100F a good choice?

Hi All!

I am having a network adapter issue with my old acer Intel-i5 and windows 10… so i decided to build a new desktop dedicated to Plex.

Basically what i need is that this new machine will be able to stream maximun 03 concurrent streams and 02 direct streams.

My Budget is really tight :frowning:

So here is what i plan:

CPU: Intel i3-9100F
MotherBoard: ASUS-Prime H310M-E
Memory: Corsair 16GB RAM CMK16GX4M1A2400C16
SSD: 240 GB SAMSUNG EVO-860
OS: Windows10 build 1903 runnung Latest PMS

I know that is a simple machine. but my questions is: Does this setup will handle 03 transcodes and 02 direct plays?

Any suggestions will be well accepted!

THX,
Braz.

The most important question: 3 transcodes of what?
If you only have 1080p max resolution and no video using the HEVC codec, this cpu can handle it easily.

It has a relatively good ‘single thread rating’, so it is well suited for Plex, IMHO.

It might be able to handle HEVC video if you enable hardware transcoding.

Thanks @OttoKerner

Most of my files are MKV 1080p (h.264 /AC3) with .srt (external) subtiltes files that i will transcode to 3 mbits to stream.

You should be good there.

Don’t skimp on a proper cpu cooler
(and don’t make the case so small that you cannot fit a proper cooler into it).

I recommend to use a bigger cooler intended for overclockers. These are highly efficient and use big fans, which, when slowed down are still virtually silent.
This ensures that even under full load your cpu won’t go into “thermal throttling” and starts to sound like a jet engine

Thank you for your tips @OttoKerner! I will keep this in mind.

One comment. The F processors do not have a GPU, so you won’t be able to take advantage of hardware accelerated transcoding.

Using the GPU for video transcoding greatly reduces the load on the CPU. It will also give you some headroom for future growth (more transcoded streams, HEVC video, etc).

The i3-9100 is about $20 USD more than the i3-9100F on Amazon (9100, 9100F).

Something to consider before finalizing your purchases.

Oops, totally missed that. That’s a severe restriction for Plex use.

Hi @FordGuy61

I did not consider that too! Thank you
Well, what about buy i3-8350K ? better?
THX,
Braz

Actually no.
It has only marginally better overall performance than the 9100
but it has worse single thread rating
and it requires more power.

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i3-9100+%40+3.60GHz&id=3479
vs.
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i3-8350K+%40+4.00GHz&id=3102

After all, the two cpu models were released over 1 year apart. So the 9100 is bound to be more efficient.

So… Can you guys give me some options which one to get?

Core i3-9100
(without the “F”)

Hi @OttoKerner and @FordGuy61!

Here in Brazil I could not find i3-9100 :frowning:
So i am thinking to get i5-8400 with MB gigabyte B360 M.
Is it a good choice? .
I Just want (maximun) 3-4 1080p to 720p H.264 concurrent streams. No 4K or H.265.

Braz.

That’s “Coffee Lake”
Should be OK, particularly with hardware transcoding enabled, but it has enough power to transcode your files even without hardware support.

Hi @OttoKerner,

I will go ahead and build this new PC.
Thank you for your support!
