Need help organizing files

Under plex web general I found this : Version 4.47.1 not sure what it refers to

Hi! I would like to organize my movies and clips so that when I view my server on my windows PC or on my FIre box they are not in a total jumble.

  1. I notice that they display differently on the fire box and the windows PC - the PC is less of a jumble. I would like to fix this for both platforms.
  2. Most of the files are organized correctly by plex but there are a few that are incorrect and I see no way to correct it. Meaning: a movie is filed as a music video. How do I file it as a movie?
3, I found this page and I would like to organize them like this but it seems to be a back end thing and there are no instructions on how to access that. How do I access this?

Thank you for your assistance!

First of all how are your files currently organized? Are you following the correct Plex format?

Drive/Movies/Movie Title (Movie Year)/Movie Title (Movie Year).mkv
Drive/TV Shows/TV Show Title (TV Show Year)/Season 1/TV Show Title S01E01.mkv
Drive/TV Shows/TV Show Title (TV Show Year)/Season 2/TV Show Title S01E02.mkv
etc…

As I stated, I uploaded them. I have no idea how to organize them that way without instructions on how to access this back end coded data. I am using the gui.

What you are referring to as ā€˜back end’ is just basic file organization.
Do you know how to create folders and how to move and rename files in Windows?

If you’re using a Windows server how do you not know how to create folders/rename files?

Drive/Movies/Movie Title (Movie Year)/Movie Title (Movie Year).mkv

All I did was upload my movies - which currently exist in folders on windows. So yes I understand that. I do have them organized in a special Plex folder, not named movies Are you saying that I have to have the folder specifically named /Movies ? Also why does the movie need to be listed twice? lastly parentheses are not recognized in windows naming convention so please explain…

What is .mkv?

so currently its
drive/Plex/movies/Red.wmv
drive/Plex/tv shows/diary.wmv
drive/Plex/music/nin.wmv

FYI if you look at the link I included, that looks like basic linux type coding. I see from your comments that it was not intended to read that way and was simply an attempt to indicate windows file structure.

So you have a Windows Server? or Linux Server?

What is hard to understand to follow the naming convention? Do you not understand file names/file structures?

Drive/Plex/Movies/Red (Year)/Red (Year).wmv
Drive/Plex/TV Shows/Diary(Year)/Diary(Year).wmv
Drive/Plex/Music/Artist/Album/Track 01.mp3

Should be;
drive/Plex/movies/Red (2020)/Red (2020).wmv
drive/Plex/tv shows/Diary/diary S01E01.wmv
drive/Plex/music/Artist/Album/01 - nin.wmv

.mkv is just a video file type extension.

Yes ( ) are allowed in Windows file and folder naming.

Thank you Dan. So each item needs to be in a separate folder of it’s own in windows? That is what I don’t understand. In other words I will have to create a folder for each file?

Only for Movies.

TV Shows have a folder for each season or series.
Should have been;
drive/Plex/tv shows/Diary/Season 01/diary S01E01.wmv

Music has a folder for each album.

Did you set up Libraries in Plex?

Movie library pointing to drive/Plex/movies
TV Shows library pointing to drive/Plex/tv shows
Muasic library pointing to drive/Plex/music

Plex is not intuitive.

I get the folders for Tv shows and albums. It seems illogical and redundant for each individual movie. It is what it is, however. Thank you for the explanation.

I am not sure how to set up separate libraries in Plex, it seems that plex read all the folders and added the files, which is why it’s jumbled. .I would love to clear that up by pointing the library to the appropriate folder!

You may not feel that Plex is intuitive but there are support articles for every situation imaginable.

How did you set up the library you have?
Did you select drive/Plex as the base folder?
Do the same thing but go one folder farther. One for each, Movies, TV Shows and Music.
There is a reason for this. Plex treats each media type differently. Getting info for each from different sources.

Movies have their own folders because in a lot of cases there are more than one file per movie. There is the video, subtitles, cover art and other graphics.
Your PC filing system is the same as a filing cabinet. You wouldn’t (or shouldn’t) throw the info for every movie you own into one file folder then expect to find the info for one movie easily.

These are the articles on setting up your media.

Thank you Dan. This brings up a separate question - I noticed that the subtitles are not included in the files. I see that mkv does include them. I use VLC which may not be the best tool for this process as it has issues with mkv files. Can you recommend another program for converting my DVDs?

Over the years I’ve started from scratch several times.

Once you have your media organized correctly it’s much easier to work with though.

yes! By the time I’m done I’ll be a Plex Ninja too lol

There are tools which can save you a lot of the grunt work, particularly with tv shows. The most popular is Filebot, but it’s not free.

Thank you Otto!

Ok last question - what do the numbers in the upper left hand corner mean?

That is the ā€˜Duplicate’ indicator.
Plex has recognized more than one file as being the same movie.
Whether that is correct, only you can judge.
Call up the Plex media info of this item, then look at the path and file names at the top.

Sticking to the recommended naming schema helps to avoid mismatches like this.
