I recently joined Plex and not knowing a lot about Plex proceeded by purchasing a lifetime Plex Pass thinking that this would give me latest releases. People that I know can watch movies like 1883 although we cant access it - why? Is there a additional monthly charge to access latest releases? Please help - we have a Sony smart TV what more do I need to do?
A Plex Pass has nothing to do with access to content. We do not current sell any content. All of our content is free with commercials and generally it will not be new things.
A Plex Pass is for extra features for the Plex Media Server application which you install on your computer. Plex Media Server is sort of like iTunes where folks can rip their own DVD, Blurays, etc to file and have the app organize them then stream them to our various player apps.
One of these features is DVR which allows folks to install a compatible tuner (not sold by us) and record TV for example.
Again a Plex Pass does not get to access to content. We have no rights so ditrubute thigns like 1883. If folks have it they got it in a file though DVR or other means which have nothing to do with our software.

Thanks BigWheel – I’m happy to continue on with Plex Pass although the other people that I referred to have a lot more movies than we have they have an alphabetical list on the right hand side of screen that they can select from – we haven’t got this – what have I missed in not getting this? We’re an Australian couple and not that computer savvy so any help would be great. Thanks Toby
What you are describing is a library of files created in the Plex Media Server. When configuring the Plex Media Server on a computer a user creates a library by configureing it with folder on their computer has all their files of movie files. They can create another library of their TV show files. The server then catalogues those files. Plex player apps like the one on your Sony TV can access those files from the server.
Your friends either have a Plex Media Server of their own or they have a friend who is sharing their Plex Media Server libraries with their accounts. Sharing ones server does not require a Plex Pass.
Again Plex Pass will not get you any access to more movies/shows.
