[Need Help] Some features on PMS are not clear in my mind

Hi all!

My setup:

Running: OS: W10 1909
PMS Build: 1.18.8.2527
4x 4 GB DDR3 GEIL GEC34GB1333C9SC (1333 Mhz)
NVIDIA GEFORCE 1050 Ti
SSD SAMSUNG EVO 850 500 GB

Can someone please explain this to me?

Some features on PMS are not clear in my mind.

  1. Under transcoder options when I set “Use hardware acceleration when available” can I transcode more than 2 clients. I know 1050 Ti can only handle 2 transcodes. Also, can I set “Prefer higher speed encoding”

  2. Should I add more RAM memory to do “memory transcode” instead use my SSD to do the job?

  3. Under Remote Access options, I set my “internet upload speed” to 13 mbits and “Limit remote stream bitrate” to 3 mbits doing this the server will “lock” the resolution to 3 mbits to all concurrent streams i may have?

  4. Under Quality options should I set " Automatically adjust quality" enable or disable? If enable? Should I turn on this option on the clients too?

Thank you very much to help me

hi,

  1. you can transcode as many as your system can handle. the nvidia limit is for encoding (decoding can use unlimited gpu). if/when the gpu runs out, plex will use cpu. the ‘higher speed’ only applies to cpu transcoding.

there is also a drive hack which can remove the limit @ GitHub - keylase/nvidia-patch: This patch removes restriction on maximum number of simultaneous NVENC video encoding sessions imposed by Nvidia to consumer-grade GPUs.

  1. transcode to ram folder/drive will help avoid making writes to ssd drives, minimum recommended ram would be 32g (16 to ram drive). Better would be 64g+ ram (32 ram drive).
Ram drives will NOT make transcoding faster or allow you to transcode more clients.

  2. 13 is the total bandwidth plex can use, plex will downshift new connections to lower quality when it starts reaching your 13m cap. Limit remote bitrate affects the maximum each client can use (so they can’t use your entire 13m).

  3. most times you can leave it automatic so plex can adjust dynamically as needed. Depending on the stability of your or your client internet connection, this may cause quality to go up/down visibly.

Hi @TeknoJunky!

Thank you for your reply!

I will have a look on the hack… Is there any tutorial how to do it?

On 4 The automatic set is valid only for plex web or to all the clients?

THX,
Braz

each client must set automatic.

unfortunately there is currently no way for the server to adjust or control the client settings, so you (or your users) must adjust them individually.

ok! THX!
About the hack… Is there a tutorial how to do it in windows? i am really bad to do those things.

Braz.

there is a link to the step by step windows instructions near the start of the readme on the link provided.

Ok Thanks for the help

Hi @TeknoJunky!

The hack works! You save me

THX,
Braz.
