How can I setup a DS916 as a DVR device without buying another product such as hdhomerun?
Repeatedly searched support and it just promotes hdhomerun
Plex provides the software. You still have to have either an over the air antenna or a unencrypted cable connections and a “tuner” to actually receive and record TV. The tuner is a device like the HD homerun.
Thanks, If I use the homerun or another tuner, how can I choose the Synology NAS as the prefered storage location?
I don’t run a Synology NAS but there are others on the forum that do. You can install Plex Media Server (PMS) directly on the Synology: https://www.plex.tv/downloads/ change the selection to Synology. You can then configure the PMS DVR with your tuner device and setup recordings. Tagging another Ninja (@trumpy81) that knows a bit more about Synology so hopefully he can provide more insight on the capabilities of the Synology DS-916+ as a server. It is currently night time where he is at so might be a while before he sees this thread.
As others have said, you need a tuner like an HDHomeRun to actually get the video signal. Once you have that, you have multiple options.
I have the same NAS as you (DS916+) and I’ve done this in two configurations. I originally had my main Plex Media Server instance on a MacMini back when DVR was in beta. I connected the HDHomeRun to that and then set the storage location as the NAS, which also holds all the other media files I have.
I have since moved to using the Plex Media Server running on the NAS as the DVR instance and it works the same way.
There is really no difference either way you choose, just make sure your storage location is the NAS.
