Need to click several times on Plex to get it open

Server Version#: 1.26.1.5798 (Plex Shield Server)
Player Version#: 9.2.0.32520
Shield OS version: up to date (latest version as of today)

Hello - since perhaps 2 months, in order to access Plex on my Nvidia Shield (pro 2019) I need to click several times on the Plex app from the homepage. At the first click I see the Plex logo animation but then it’s coming back to the Shield home page menu. When clicking again it doesn’t work (2-3 times, nothing happens, not open, no plex logo animation) and after 4-5 times it works and accept to open Plex properly.

I reinstalled fully Plex client and Plex server on the shield and there is still the problem (without any libraries!!). Attached is the log file if it helps, the latest run is showing the process when all reinstalled without library.

Did you uninstall/remove updates for the server version? That will remove your setup. Your latest logs looks like a brand new install.

I did a full from scratch reinstall yes. There is one empty server without library and the problem still occurs. Very strange

That’s what happens when you uninstall Plex Media Server on the Shield. It removes all the settings and starts over, but that old server is still tied to your account. So when you sign in, it will still show the old server, but it will have no content since it isn’t actually running. You need to use Plex Web to remove that server from your account.

You then need to setup the server on the Shield again. In the Plex client app on the Shield, go to settings, then turn on the server from there. You’ll get the wizard to go through the setup process again.

I did that. the issue is that to launch Plex i have to click several times. After around 5 attempts (click Plex on the shield) it works but it’s not normal

I agree. That should not happen and I’m unable to reproduce that. For me, it opens correctly the first time. Can you get me the android logs once you do have it open. I’d like to see if the app is reporting any issues.

Still trying to get the android log. I got another version of the plex log (see attached,by activating network log in settings/advanced) perhaps it helps (looking at the last few mins of the logs, I did the issue)

Could someone check the log in my previous msg pls ?

I’m looking at your logs and don’t see anything that stands out. I see the app going to the background and coming back to focus. It is the OS that moves the app to the background, the app doesn’t do that itself.

I see your Shield is on Android 11. Are you running the latest firmware? I’ve found that sometimes things don’t work quite right after a firmware update. If you don’t mind, you can try doing a factory reset and then install Plex afterwards. That should make things more stable.

Not sure to understand what you mean by the app going to background. Yes I’m running latest firmware. I did a factory reset and reisntalled everything, but unfortunately it is exactly the same situation. Please see attached log.

If you double tap and bring up the app switcher on the Shield can you see Plex running and just switch to it?

Yes, this is ok

Attached is a video of the issue. When first I’m opening Plex with the logo animation working ok but then it is closing automatically and going back to Nvidia shield homepage. Then I’m clicking several times to make it opening.

Apps on Android don’t really close like on other operating systems. They either run in the foreground, where you can interact with the app, or it runs in the background, waiting to come to the foreground to be used. It’s like the main Shield’s home page. Once you run another app, that home page moves to the background. When you return to the home page, the other app moves to the background and the home page moves to the foreground.

In your video, the Plex app appears to run, then moves to the background and the home page comes back to the foreground. I thought maybe it crashed but when you tried a second time, the app opened up immediately without the logo, which indicates the app did not crash previously but did get moved to the background. I have no idea why it would do that. I’ll check with the devs, but I’m pretty sure this is not something we can control. My guess is a bug with the Shield itself.

Thanks for your feedback. The thing is that Plex is the only app having this behavior (all the other applications are opening without this issue)

Hi!
For me the issue is quite different but it seems to be since the last release of Shield firmware too: Plex Server crashes very often, its database too (corrupted, thanks to backups…).

The recommandation is to perform a hard reset? To have a fresh install? But can I preserve my database? It’s a pain to rebuild collections, playlists and so on…

@Nick0 You issue is Plex Media Server. This thread is about the Plex client. Your issue with the server has been reported. You should be able to search and find several thread regarding that.

I’ve also noticed similar behavior for the last several months on my Shield Pro 2019. Ever since I factory reset my Shield to get things to actually work on one of the 9.0.1 Hotfixes. I eventually realized that I didn’t have to actually click on Plex several times to get it to open. I just had to wait.

Without fail, if I click on Plex, the splashscreen appears, and I immediately get dumped to the homescreen as you show in your video. Then, if I wait 5-10 seconds, Plex just opens.

For what it’s worth, I have Adopted Storage setup on my Shield. The Plex app is listed as being installed in “Internal Shared Storage” (versus the other choice, which is my ADATA USB SSD drive that is for Adopted Storage). Plex Media Server is also installed in Internal Shared Storage, with the database relocated to Adopted Storage using the setting in the Server app.
