Need to rebuid OS, Want to do the old Windows trick

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

With Windows, if I had an OS problem I would back up the program files, reinstall the OS and the program and then copy the backed up program files back on top of the program. That way I got all my previous configuration and options back.

If I was to do the same with Plex because of issues after the move to Ubuntu 22.04 ( I want to reinstall the OS fresh and clean), what files would I need to copy?

Thank you sir!

I have experience at this so its way easier when the OS is on it own drive…

If I may suggest?

This is far cleaner and quicker on Linux than COPYing everything.

  1. Make a tar ball of the metadata directory (it saves all the date/time stamps and symbolic links)
  2. install fresh
  3. Extract the tar file in place after installing PMS on the rebuilt host
sudo bash
cd /var/lib/plexmediaserver
tar cf /path/to/somewhere/safe/PlexBackup.tar ./Library

Save PlexBackup.tar

After reinstall, all media mounted again, and PMS installed

sudo bash
systemctl stop plexmediaserver
cd /var/lib/plexmediaserver
tar xf /path/to/PlexBackup.tar
chown -R plex:plex ./Library
systemctl start plexmediaserver
