Network flooding

I saw in the locked thread http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/62649-rasplex-announcements/ that you were aware of a network flooding problem. I don't experience it myself but when I brought my Rasberry Pi to my parents' house it completely borked their network. I don't know what info you got but I thought I'd chip in: They have two Linksys WRT54G flashed with DD-WRT (what version I'm not sure exactly), linked together with WDS.

I'll be visiting them this Sunday; I can try to get more data if you need it.

Is this fixed in 0.1.24?

I will try it myself later today.

I'm using the latest version Apple AirPort Extreme with latest firmware and a standard setup.

It makes rasplex unusable and I really miss it, it used to work just fine a couple of versions ago.

I hope so, but as I said I can't replicate this problem.

I might have to buy one of these bunk routers to try for myself...

It still happens in 0.1.24 I'm afraid :(

I turn it on and after 3-5 minutes my network slows to a crawl. Turn it off, everything works again.

I have access to an Airport Extreme, I'll see about updating the firmware to see if I can reproduce this.

I have the same issue, tested in .19 and .24 I have posted Wireshark log on trello. I just did a test with my laptop connected directly to the Rasperry pi, and set up p2p, the issue went away. So then i plugged back into the local network, and the problem came back. The next test was a suggestion someone made to set a static ip address on the raspberry pi, so I went into the Rasplex settings>Network, and set a static Ip address, then restarted, and to my surprise the problem was gone, wireshark was still logging udp packets from the Pi but they were only about every 4 seconds.

Now.. to figure out what was causing the problem in the first place..

Yes I have found myself that i had a constant data flow from PMS to pi when i was configured in DHCP. This instantly stopped when I configured it with static IP.

So could people havinf the flooding issue try to do so Go To preferences > Rasplex Settings  > network and define the static IP field to whatever IP is valid on you subnet.

We would be interested to know if this fixes the Netwrok flooding issue for everyone. Thanks for trying and report in this thread :)

Managed to fix the issue on one of my routers by deselecting the tick box "Allow Multicast from Broadband Network" under my wireless settings. Rebooted the pi many times and the problem was definitely fixed. Unfortunately my other router is having the same problem, but it is a bit less configurable, so not having much luck fixing it.. for now I will have to stick to static IP addressing.

From our currently ongoing investigations it seems that the issue is coming from Plex discovery protocol (GDM).

When running DHCP on client and not specifying the server this flooding issue seems to happen.

  • If you switch DHCP off and set fixed IP on the RPI that should make this issue disapear
  • Another solution which seems to work is leave RPI with DHCP and enter manually PMS server IP in preferences / network.

If you're having the issue and get it solved with any of these two solutions, please report here, we appreciate feedback :)

I have tried both setting a static IP in rasplex and setting a manual PMS server in preferences / network.

It still floods my network after a couple of minutes, I'm afraid.

EDIT, disregard my previous post:

For me the DHCP off and PMS IP are working. Be sure to double check the settings are saved upon reboot.

By the way I have an AirPort Extreme and wired rPI.

With the network flooding my Internet speed tested on speedtest went from 7ms/10Mbps/20Mbps to a mere 400ms/0.01Mbps/0.03Mbps clearly a bad issue…

I too am having this issue. As soon as the rpi boots up, I can see the lights on my router starting to go bananas. I've set a fixed IP in Rasplex settings / Network, but I am unable to specify the IP to the PMS because when I try to navigate to Preferences -> Network, Rasplex just opens up Preferences -> Services instead. Does anyone else have this problem?

I don't have an apple router by the way. My router is a Netgear CG3100 and rpi is connected via wire, not wireless.

Ok everyone, good news we have :)

seems a fix has been found for this issue. 0.1.25 is available for download on http://sourceforge.net/projects/rasplex/files/release/

Would be sweet to have some feedback from people having this issue to confirm it has been definitely fixed.

and big thanks to a_wein to have worked on this :)

/Cheers

Great work a_wein! And thanks Elan for consulting on this!

Great guys - will try it right away and report back :)

It seems it's finally fixed - great job guys!

So far I've been running rasplex for an hour and my network (AirPort Extreme) hasn't slowed down :)

Thanks again.

fixed for me on 0.1.25

Fixed for me as well in 0.1.25

I'm experiencing this on RasPlex 0.3.1.  It's not constant, but pretty often, having the RasPlex wired to an Airport Extreme (extending a network) totally kills my network.  I unplugged the RasPlex last night and all is well.  I haven't tried the older solution of manually setting IPs (yet).  Anyone else still having this issue?

I too seem to be having this issue in RasPlex 0.3.1. It won't even fully boot if I have it plugged into my router. I managed to get a static IP set by plugging the ethernet into my laptop, but as soon as I switched it back over to my router it froze up within seconds.
