network not fast enough to play 4K

I am using an AppleTV 4K and it is directly connected to my Netgear Nighthawk Router and my PMS is also directly connected to that router but I get a message saying my network is not fast enough. The router is a gigabit router so I am not sure why it should not be fast enough. Any suggestions on how to improve the speed available?

to get things straight… when you say “directly connected” – do you mean directly connected through a wired connection or using a WIFI?

directly connect via ethernet cable

Might the movie be transcoding or direct streaming?

What does Now Playing show when you are watching the movie?
https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/status/playing

It is direct streaming and buffering constantly until get the message that the network is not fast enough. I have play original Quality on in under settings.quality To get the movie to play I have to turn on Convert Automatically. This starts the Transcoder. The originally file is a 4K file being played to a AppleTV 4K on a 4K Samsung High Def TV.

Does your PMS workstation/server have a gig Ethernet card? It might be the choke point, or improperly set for a lower transmission rate.

yes I have the new iMac which is gigabit

Can you post the MediaInfo text output for the movie?

Is the file an MKV? If so, remux it to an mp4. Then it can direct play instead of direct stream.

The AppleTV 4K prefers everything in an mp4 container and with AAC or (E)AC3 audio. See Tech Specs.

Edit: AppleTV 4K Tech Specs: https://www.apple.com/apple-tv-4k/specs/

You can use Subler to remux the MKV to a MP4.

Not sure why it is saying 1080Pbut the width and height is 4K

The problems almost certainly the Plex client on the ATV 4K. I have an Amazon Fire TV 4K & using MrMC as the Plex Client it will Direct Play everything & I see ATV 4K users also singing the praises of MrMC.

This file is 1920x534. 4k is 4096x2160 or 3840x2160. Also with a file size of 5.29 Gig with H.264 codec I don’l think this is a 4K video. Perhaps the file is damaged as this file with a bitrate of 4635kbps should play well with your setup depending on your sever since there is transcoding happening. What hardware is your server running on?

Agree with @Jasonogren , it appears something is wrong with the video.

It definitely isn’t 4K. You can verify again by looking at Plex XML info, which shows how Plex sees things.

Also, whoever transcoded the movie did a less than optimal job of it. There are many mistakes.

  • The video is H264 High@4.2, which is overkill for a 1080p movie. The movies on 1080p Blu-ray discs are H264 High@4.1. When transcoding with Handbrake, ffmpeg, etc, High@4.0 is more than sufficient for 1080p. Increasing profile and/or level buys you nothing and can cause many problems.
  • For 4K, the movie would be at H264 High@5.1. (See H264 Wikipedia page).
  • The frame rate is 29.97fps. The native frame rate is 23.976fps. There is no need to adjust.
  • The aspect ratio is off. Your video is 1920x534, for a 267:400 aspect ratio. The movie, on blu-ray 1080p & 4k, ships w/ a 2.40:1 aspect ratio. For 1080p, this works out to 1920x800. See picture of back cover at Amazon.

If you want to watch the movie as is, you can manually transcode it using Handbrake. Use the Apple1080p30 preset. It should then direct play w/o issue to your AppleTV 4K. This does the same thing as choosing “Convert Automatically” in Plex. It just does it offline instead of having Plex transcode the movie in real time.

Alternately, go back to the source and make sure you obtain a true 4K version.

thanks I reencoded it and get these detail results in Plex but I am still getting the message my network is not fast enought to play it at current quality setting of 4K So still not sure what is throttling down the connection. I have the fastest gibabit Router that Netgear makes in the Nighthawk line made particularly for gamers. So I am still at a loss.

It’s not a problem with the network. Try another client.

I did download MrMC and it does play my 4K without issues. The only thing I can not see in the plex client is the live TV feeds and News can these be added to the Plex client on MrMC

When you re-encode be sure to check the box for web optimized… which you did not.
I would try that second one and make sure it is optimized… bet it works then.

where do ou check the box for web Optimization…I use IVI Pro to transcode and there is no web optimization checkbox. I even asked support and they said it is a Plex option but do not see where to turn it on at.

Web Optimization is an option in Handbrake, handbrake.fr, which many people use for transcoding video.

Try Subler, subler.org. It is a Mac only tool for remuxing and adding metadata to mp4 files. It also has an Optimization feature, which is the same as “web optimization” in Handbrake.

Open the mp4 with Subler then choose Optimize from the File menu (IIRC, not in front of Mac right now). If Optimize is unavailable, then first Save. You can then choose Optimize.

From Subler FAQ: https://bitbucket.org/galad87/subler/wiki/FAQ
What’s the “Optimize” function?
It interleaves the audio and video samples, and puts the “MooV” atom at the beginning of the file, restoring the Quicktime “fast-start” (also known as “pseudo-streaming”) ability of the file.

Handbrake FAQ: https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/latest/advanced/web-optimised.html
If you are encoding for the web and using the MP4 file format, you’ll want to turn on “Web Optimised” checkbox. This places the MP4 container header at the start of the file, optimizing it for streaming across the web.

This is often referred to as MP4 “Fast Start”.

Thanks I used Handbrake and had the web optimized switch on but when it got into plex it still says that the the web optimized is No. I am not sure what is happening. But it seems to be playing now in the Plex app on my AppleTV. So I will handbrake to transcode my 4K files in the future.
