New 1050ti or Used Quadro M2000 for transcoding?

They are around the same price, £120 ish… and the only difference I can see is that the M2000 is unlocked and allows unlimited transcoding as opposed to the 1050ti which will require modified drivers to unlock its potential.

Is there basically nothing in it, other than the fact that buying new does give me some peace of mind with a warranty!?

They could have different capabilities: https://developer.nvidia.com/video-encode-decode-gpu-support-matrix

What is your current CPU in that server? (If it’s an Intel, precise model please)

Cheers for that link… had been looking at a similar one here
https://www.elpamsoft.com/?p=Plex-Hardware-Transcoding

Havent actually bought anything yet… can quite decide on the set up I want… its a ruddy minefield!!

Ideally, I want a Qnap Nas (Poss TS-673) with a 1050ti but unsure if plex can leverage the transcodicng capabilities of the card and/or if the unlocked drivers could be used.

So Ive possibly just answered my own question!! but just trying to consider all paths!

That’s a whole different thing than a PC.
Personally I have no experience with that.
You might wanna look at Hardware transcoding 1050ti + QNAP TS-X73

Yeah I know… im reading that link at the moment… thanks!

Just need to decide which route I want to go down… the PC would definitely be the easier and probably cheaper!

there are TWO kinds of m2000 listed on the nvidia chart.

the first gen (GM107) does NOT support any x265/hevc.

the 2nd gen (GM206) does support some x265/hevc.

unless you are able to physically confirm that the m2000 is the 2nd gen model AND it has more video ram, I would suggest that the 1050 is a better deal since it is a whole newer generation with better hardware.

if the m2000 is first gen, I wouldn’t touch it at all.

Hey TechnoJunky, Thanks for sharing that. You possibly saved me from making a mistake. Do you know where the generation numbers are on these cards? I’m taking a look at this one on ebay and can’t for the life of me find those numbers on it…

sorry, no idea.

I would simply suggest you look for something that is already well known to work.

look for used gtx 1050 or higher, or new gtx 1650/1660.

The first gen and second gen that you are referring to are actually mobile and desktop chips. https://developer.nvidia.com/video-encode-decode-gpu-support-matrix

M and D are mobile and desktop
So in theory the desktop would have h.265 support for 2:4:0 chroma sampling

Hey, that model that you show in the picture is the GM206GL (GM206)
As the model of the pcb is the PG303
