Before I make this purchase to help with transcodes for family members viewing on their Rokus, I noticed Nvidia has an updated card (GTX 1650) that is also low profile and about the same price.
Worth getting the newer card to see if it works (QNAP has Nvidia drivers now) or just get the 1050Ti ?
check the forums before you decide for two reasons:
There are limitations imposed by QNAP presently. Some models are not permitted (QTS limits) to use GPUs in “QTS mode” (which Plex needs). Those limited models only allow GPU assignment to VM’s and containers.
I have been in contact with the QNAP PM about these limitations. He wanted to know why Plex wouldn’t work on certain QNAP systems. I informed him of the above QNAP-imposed limits. I further assured him that PMS will use what QNAP permits.
The specific compatibility question to ask: “Can the GPU card be placed in ‘QTS’ mode for Plex use by the native Plex package?”
You’ll find some answers here. If you don’t, QNAP can tell you
In the end, the upgrade from the 1050 to the 1650 may not be that big when it comes to transcoding versus using them in a gaming pc. Maybe I’m wrong. Best I can do is see if I can purchase an open box or used one to try.
I’m definitely considering an HTPC case, low profile GPU, and Windows. The storage will still be on the NAS but both will be wired to the switch and short of some particular features in PMS not working well with network shares, should be a lot better than being at QNAP’s mercy.
I have an Msi GTX 1050Ti on my 873, everything works great, you would have no difference from a 1650, things change with a 1650super because it is no longer pascal but chip turing, but these cards need the 6pin connector and therefore the card does not will light up on the qnap.
the block to 2 simultaneous streams in transcoding always remains, I’m waiting for a driver update by qnap to be able to use 3 simultaneous streams as on windows.
the latest qnap nvidia drivers are: NVIDIA 3.0.5 GPU driver which groups the 418.56 drivers.
