New ATV 3, any reason not to update the OS?

Hi everyone.

After being a user of an ATV2 with iOS 5.0.2 and the JB Plex app, I just picked up an ATV3. The addition of HBO GO and other updates, along with better performance on the ATV3 pushed me to buy it to use with PlexConnect. It came with 5.2.1 installed. Is it even worth it to save the blobs for the ATV3? I know there's no jailbreak, but I'm not even sure that TinyUmbrella can even grab the blobs for ATV3 5.2.1 or if Apple is even signing for it anymore. Just curious what you'd recommend before updating to 5.3.

Thanks everyone!

Nope safe to update, I am running the latest and greatest and it works just fine with plex connect.

Although they are not being signed you can dump your current blobs with Redsnow or iFaith.

I suggest you do as it does not take long and it gives you the widest range of options.

Whilst you are at it also grab your 5.3 blobs ;)

It may be that there has been an exploit found.

I know I should backup my blobs but I just hate having to hook it up to my stinking machine every time LOL, I wish there was a way to do it over SSH

If you have ATV flash you can install something on the ATV that will backup any blobs that are still being signed.

If you install NitoTV there is also a package on there that lets you SSH in and backup your blobs to Cydia.
TBH i do use TinyUmbrella though, it is not too much hassle for 5 minutes work a few times a year.

Thanks f00b4r! I will hook up the ATV3 and grab my blobs. I've got most of them from 4.4.4 on for my ATV2, might as well do it for the ATV3.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

With TinyUmbrella you don't need to hook app you aTV to catch the blobs... Or does it? It just has to made known once, I think.

The main trouble is that I have to update TinyUmbrella EVERY time I use it... :-D

I didnt realize you dont have to hook it up every time, thanks for the heads up, just tried to backup my atv2 on 4.4.4 and also my new atv3 (only posting log for atv3 though) and this is what I get

I have the latest firmware on there 5.3

...it should save the 5.3 blobs, I guess. Maybe we need another update?

TinyUmbrella does NOT save the blobs of the firmware currently on your device - it saves the ones that Apple is currently signing.

To read the on from you aTV, you need to use iFaith or something.

Tinyumbrella will be updated shortly for 5.3, oops I forgot it sometimes takes a week or so before it is updated.

Saving Blobs:

Are you sure this still works for a non-jailbroken atv3 that is running latest sw? From what i've seen redsnow is for jailbreaking (hasn't happened yet on at3) and ifaith doesn't support atv3 and tinyumbrella complains apple does/'t sign anymore?

Can we just stop update msgs from atv?

Yes this still works, I am on 5.3 (the latest)

Tinyumbrella throws a message that apple doesn't sign anymore, etc. So how would I do this?

Tiny umbrella has not been updated to pull down the blobs for 5.3 yet.

just a sec, is there a reason not to update in the future ?

Thank you Monsieur Latte, I'll just wait then
