New "automatic" Home Screen management is TERRIBLE

Why on earth are you forcing us all into the terrible new automated management? Why would you take away my ability to customize the home screen how I want it?

Right now, it’s about perfect. My sidebar has playlists at the top, then pinned libraries in alphabetical order. The body of the Home Screen, however, after putting Continue Watching and On Deck at the top, continues with recently added TV combined from ALL TV libraries, then recently added movies from ALL movie libraries except the ones I’ve excluded, then playlists.

I don’t mind that the new automatically managed layout combines “Continue Watching” and “On Deck,” but everything else is a hot mess. Every single pinned library has its own “recently added” feed—a real pain when I have multiple libraries for each category, because not only does it take up a lot of vertical real estate but it also makes it impossible to see all my TV or all my movies at a single glance. Also annoyingly, I can’t change their order without changing the sidebar order, too. If I want the feeds in a comfortable, use-based order on the main page, I need to scramble them up in the sidebar, making it impossible to quickly jump to a given library by simply looking for it alphabetically on the left.

These “recently added” feeds, instead of including other libraries that I haven’t pinned but also haven’t excluded, now don’t show anything that isn’t in the sidebar. This means I have to choose between having all these libraries shown on the sidebar and home screen (getting an extra effing “recently added” feed for every!! single!! one!!!) or having to go digging into my unpinned libraries every time I even want to even see if there’s a new episode or film added, which pretty much defeats the purpose of having it right up on the Home Screen.

Please, please, please: Reconsider how you’re setting up automated Home Screen management to allow for at least some granularity of settings and/or JUST KEEP LETTING US MANAGE IT OURSELVES. Trying to make any layout one-size-fits-all means that for most people it won’t be great, and for some people it will be a useless, cluttered nightmare.

There is another thread here with a lot of people with similar complaints.
https://forums.plex.tv/t/on-deck-continue-watching-recently-added/666191/877

They are going to recombine all the recently added libraries in a single row in their next update so we should have the option to just have one for movies and one for tv back

I understand what you’re saying about having to pin the libraries in the same order as the rows

There are things I want pinned for easy access but don’t use enough to justify having them take up a row on the home screen

It’s technically still giving you “control over your content” but in a downgraded way from what we’re used to.

They refer to it saying “Your Media Server content just got a promotion” which from my point of view is not the case.

The main problem I had with the change was the new continue watching/on deck only contained 6-10 shows instead of the 100 I had in on deck before

When you watched the 6th show the last one in the list would just drop off back into the abyss of your library and you had to manually search it out again next time

They are suppose to fix that too but by how many and when I’m not clear on

You are correct, they are trying to make a one size fits all that you can sort of customize but it’s nowhere near the control we had before

Anyway, you can visit that other link I gave you and maybe find some more detailed answers

Awesome, thanks—I tried searching for “home screen” in this subforum and didn’t turn up anything relevant.

Who at Plex thought this idea was a good one? What a terrible shift. Why you are crapping all over Plex users and server owner with bad horrible decision. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the way it was. I would really like an EMPLOYEE answer to this question. Did you seek input from the community before implementing this horrid change on everyone? Did you give a per-cursour that you were going to take us down a rocky crappy crappy road and dump on the side like used towels? Yes my anger is bringing out my dark side a bit. Please advise us on what justification you used to make such a horrid horrid decision. Please tell us you are going to give us the option to use the Previous customization scheme.

Hey developers, get a Roku, hook it up to a decent size screen 43" or larger (so you can enjoy the beautiful layout on the screen (sarcasm) ) and use the garbage you have created for one week and use it as if you were in charge of the whole family’s entertainment and then, maybe then you will see what a cluster-f you’ve created. Be sure to push out an update that f’s it all up too during that week and changes everything without asking. Don’t forget to also navigate seasons and play/delete…oh and change recording options too. Dont miss out though on more fun when you click the FF or RW a few times so you can enjoy it starting the recording over a for no reason. If you’re lucky, and I’m sure you will be, you’ll get to see the spinning wheel stuck at 33% for what feels like an eternity…but, that makes for great conversation with the family about how everything else works fine except for PLEX. Be careful though, don’t FF and get too close to the end of a recording, because that can trigger it to just halt and end it and mark as played. (I have multiple Roku Premier + and Ultra LT units, all hardwired and they all do the same thing, no matter what I tweak in the settings) I just want to scream at the sheer ridiculous of it all.

Also, why the heck is the DVR section not separate to begin with?
It’s ridiculous what you have to do to just change a recording option (series, etc). We should be able to click on a show title and go to more options and boom, there’s everything you can do with the show/series right there. I go through more batteries in every room where there is a TV because to do anything with Plex I have to click and click and click and click and click and click and click and click and click and…well you get the point…actually, I’m not sure you do because nothing seems to have improved with ease of use in a VERY long time. In fact, its gotten worse.

Heres a tip…seek out everyday people of all ages off the street, sit them in a room with Plex and and give them a remote…maybe then you can see how absolutely ridiculous your layout/format is and they begin to navigate it. Be sure to take note as they stumble through all the layers of cruddy developing. PLEX is not intuitive and sleek, it’s messy, clunky and absolutely downright stupid to navigate and use.

I apologize for being so negative but seriously, come on.

I just do not understand how forcing this new, non-editable layout upon your paying users is ok? If you want that to be the default for people who can’t figure out their media or your run of the mill plug and play crowd, thats fine, but allow the majority of us to have the option, like we had before to disable.

Seriously, not all of us want a cluttered home screen with suggested this and recently added that nonsense. Why would anyone want to scroll down past all the B S to look through “shows on now” when they could have just clicked on the "Live TV & DVR? Even then, when you go into DVR content, you have to click and click and click (especially when you have season content) just to watch an episode. Do you guys somehow get paid every time we click?? (Don’t even get me started as to why we can’t watch content locally when the internet drops) Anyways, back on track…

Looking at the new forced layout on a TV of any size, is still a mess. Nothing is formatted correctly to fit the screen and for the older generation, they are especially confused as I have had MANY calls regarding “what is all of this JUNK on my screen now and how can I get rid of it”? I don’t blame them, it is JUNK. (Back story) I had those clients set up with simply the “continue watching” and anything else they wanted to watch, they clicked on the pinned sources. Just a nice CLEAN interface…Noticed what I mentioned there?? I was able to TAILOR the settings based upon the END USERS NEEDS! But now, thankfully, you guys have determined a one size fits all approach is best. That definitely is what has proven to work well with companies.

I’m looking forward to the future to where other current and new developers make a better streamlined product so I can finally migrate away from this clunky chaos known as PLEX. I mean seriously, Windows Media Center had better functionality and usability, (minus windows normal headaches) especially in their DVR form and function and they had a normal TV grid out the gate and that was 15+ years ago.

All I’m trying to say is focus on getting the simplification part refined, then build on that, but its like you guys just toss it all at the wall, somehow, it all sticks but none of it is really all that good…REFINE your product and if its a bottom line issue, get more investors and even raise your Plex pass rates so long as we the users know its going towards serious development to make it better but don’t cut off all customization, that should be a given.

I found this in another thread. It works. You can limit the home screen by unchecking every box you want. However, it will still leaves Recent Channels and Shows On Now…but its better than what it was.

Note: there is a big hand icon that will show up once you’ve expanded each. At fist I thought it wasn’t going to allow me to uncheck a box, but it will, you have to be very precise with the mouse get it right on the box, the hand will disappear, the pointer will be back and you can click away.

Hi MM, not sure why you’re posting a bunch of screenshots in this thread now? They don’t seem to be relevant to the issues I’m describing. Maybe start a new thread?

Hello, I posted a how-to I found, above the screenshot, which correlates with it. Unless I’m somehow mistaken after reading your very first post that kicked off this thread, you are not happy with what they’ve done with the automated home screen. I am not either. After digging, I found a solution that worked removing 90% of that clutter they just forced upon us. That screenshot shows you the fix. Log into your server and use the how-to.

Yeah, this has all been brought up in another thread (the one linked by the first person who replied), and it doesn’t address my issues at all. (Also, screenshots are literally the worst way to share info like that. Just a link would work much better.) I appreciate the thought, but it’s not relevant to me.

Thanks for the feedback :+1:
