New computer?

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

My old Mac completely died, I have no access to it, at all. I have my external with all my media on it. I got a new computer yesterday. I downloaded Plex to the new computer, but it is still trying to pull from my old macbook. I don’t know how to update everything to my new computer. Google isn’t helping…what do I need to do? Make a new account?

I would suggest doing a clean install of PMS and re link your Libraries storage, the new Movie Scanner is awesome and quick as long as you have your Files named and structured correctly.

Thanks! So uninstall the new version I put on my new macbook and put i t on again…? All my files are named accordingly, I just…cant get the old macbook server to go away

The OS I gather is Big Sur? Is it a M1?

If so, you will need to allow access in Security and Privacy Preferences.

If all your asking is to remove the old server delete the Tile in Authorised devices.

I’m not entirely sure I’m explaining it right… I got a new laptop and when I logged in, my account is only pulling the old server info, but I have a whole new computer, the macbook pro is deader than dead. All of my media is on an external, but it’s safe, and that’s where my plex used to pull frmo.

But It won’t let me create a new server, or pull any of those files. I’m not really sure what to do… I am very new and don’t know any terminology… I’m sorry, I don’t know what M1 or big sur is. my OS is catalina 10.15.7. is there an email or chat where I can contact plex directly?

Ok so not a M1, thats ok, you will need to go to Authorised devices and delete your Server Tile marked as your old server. Restart your New computer and sign in. M1 is Apple new Silicon and Big Sur is latest MacOS version

In addition to @SE56’s suggestions, did you download the Plex app for Mac, or Plex Media Server? If you intend for your new Mac to be your media server, you need Plex Media Server. Assuming that’s what you downloaded/installed, did you complete setup by visiting http://127.0.0.1:32400/web from a browser (on that Mac)? Before you do so your server will not be configured with your libraries and associated with your account.

Okay, I did this – managed to get in and delete the old servers, and rebooted the computer. Do I need to add a new server, now that I’ve rebooted, or will it automatically do that once I log in?

I’m…actually not sure. I thought I downloaded the server for mac - though when I click the link you provided, it just gives me an error.

Check under Applications on your Mac. If you have “Plex Media Server,” you’re good. If you just have “Plex” or “Plex Media Player,” you need to install the server.

In Settings go to Authorized Devices. Filter for Server and remove the one from the MAC

Now create new libraries for the one on the new computer. If that does not make sense post some pics of what PLEX is saying. When you install on a new computer it should ask you to create a server.

I got it, everyone! Thank you so much for all your help!!! I was losing my mind

I may have spoken too soon, lol…I have my external hooked up and plex is reading from it, but the server wont load the libraries… IT’s showing recently added movies, but neither library is appearing…

Are the folder paths correct in the new libraries you added?

I think so. The movies are showing up under recently added, so I did something right. But the libraries proper are unavailable, which is strange

Post screenshot of what it looks like

Plex Media Server stores information about your settings and libraries, including what libraries you have defined, in what’s called the Plex data directory. By default, that directory lives on your boot drive, the same one as your Mac user folder. If your computer completely died and you lost access to this drive, you also lost access to your Plex data directory, and therefore all your existing library information. This is why you had to create a new server.

Since your media was stored on an external drive, you still have access to that and you can (must) create new libraries which point to it.
