I just saw the new download feature in plex android app, that allows to download the media in original quality, or to transcode it. Something new I noticed, is that this new feature, allows to use hardware acceleration on transcodes when on the other hand the sync option was not using it.
I tested transcoding 1 film to 1080p 8mbps, and once I had the movie downloaded to my mobile, I was not able to play it. It just keeps loading for ever.
Stating to check my connection… Which makes no sense as I was currently connected to my home wifi network, and not making sense, since it should not check for any connection as it is offline content.
Now, for alita combat angel movie I have the following log:
And in the app the movie is never playing, just loading for ever.
For Pacific Rim, the log shows that the player was unable to read the file correctly. I can’t tell if the downloaded file is bad or something in the file the player doesn’t like. It tries to play the file a few times then tries to transcode the file. Transcoding isn’t possible so that is triggering the error you see. This is a bug that it tries to transcode, but I’m not sure why it couldn’t play the file in the first place. Can you provide me the XML info for Pacific Rim from your server?
For Alita, it’s running into the same thing. It keeps trying to play the file but it’s failing with a similar error as for Pacific Rim. However, this does not try to switch to transcode so that error never shows, it just keeps trying. Can you provide me the XML info for this too?
Both of those are Dolby Vision with HDR-10 and DTS-HD-MA 7.1 audio. I’m guessing 1 of these is the issue. I’ll have to investigate. What device are you using?
Also letting you know, that it would be great if you could implement somehow a limit when download is available.
I saw that when someone requests a download, my P2000 and HDDs starts running under no control and maxim to finish ASAP the transcode. If I have my family watching Plex, it can possibly result on an impact on the service. A limit like: Min playbacks to allow downloads work. And simply if I set it to 10 playbacks, and that number is reached, no one can download from my server.
Just an idea, if any other limit is implemented to prevent the same, it would be nice aswell
There is no setting, but Downloads will take lower priority then streaming, so if you start watching something while a Download is in progress, the Download will slow down if needed.
I couldn’t find any issues with the actual content. We did find an issue with downloading files > 2GB. This is being fixed and will be in a future app update.
Is that issue, the one you are talking about this one I am facing at the moment:
BTW, also when it fails, it does not clear up the smartphone memory, if you delete the download from the app. The storage continues with all the data downloaded, so if many downloads fail, you will end up with no space in the smartphone, and will need to force the delete of the files externally with another app.
About the first issue I was reporting, I am not able to test it, since I am not able to finish the download
Has nothing to do with that setting. The issue is if you download a file and the Downloaded version that gets saved on your device is > 2GB, the Plex app will split that video into multiple files each <2 GB. There is an issue where the app things these failed so it never finishes. You just need to wait for the fix to come out.
You can check if this is the issue by trying to download a small movie or TV episode that is < 2 GB. If that works, then this is the issue. If that also fails, then it’s another issue. Get me new logs with this attempt of the smaller file so I can rule out the above as being the problem.
So this is weird. I have been testing with my 2 smartphones, and it seems that sort of 2GB limit is present just on 1 of them.
So on my huawei mate 20, I am able to download content with more that 2 GB, like this 2 ones:
At the same time the download process shows as this:
But on the other hand, on my One plus nord, I am totally unable to store videos from more than 2GB:
Less that 2 gb is possible.
However the download process shows as to be transcoding for my one plus nord:
So, don’t know if the issue is the transcoder or what exactly, but both smartphones have the same config applied in plex, but eratic behaviour is seen, as you can see.
Is this what it is observed from your side, do you still need the logs?
Another thing I was able to observ was, after the video failed , plex directly crashed, and restarted itself.
Do you have an ETA for this to be fixed? Just asking, as I saw that the new download feature was oficcially released and that it was enabled on all smrartphones.
TBH do not know why this feature was released without it being completely tested and all reported issues, as this one , completely solved.
Hey @anon18523487 can you please provide some updates on this?
This is running urgent, since the new feature seems to be totally broken, because of this BUG
