I’ve spent the last couple of days trying to understand this new download feature meant to replace the sync feature on my Samsung S10. Server is Plex Docker 1.24.5.5173 on an Intel Ubuntu and Android is 8.26.0.18833.
I get the “There was an error downloading this file. Swipe to remove or tap to retry” error message under the download section of my Android app. No difference if I download to SD card or internal memory on my S10. Reboot of S10 or server makes no difference, neither is using or not using hardware acceleration.
The only pattern I’ve found out so far is I’m able to download 2-3 movies to my device before the error messages appear. Server dashboard says it’s transcoding but no data is sent to the S10. The server is running as a privileged docker and the host has plenty of storage.
Please advice since the sync/download feature is a must-have for me right now. I’m not that good at digging through Plex logs, they might shed some light but I need help where to start digging.
Check your download settings. Is the location it is downloading to the correct storage device? It sounds like you may be running out of storage, and getting a generic error message instead of a empty storage message.
On your device, go to settings, click downloads. Check the storage limit entry, that it is set to the full capacity of the storage device. Also check the Storage Location option, in case you have internal and external storage.
An update
It seems if I choose to download with “Video Quality” set to “Original” I’m able to download both playlists and individual movies to my S10 SD card. I previously had 720p HD (2mbit) set as my quality.
That’s strange and a bit troubling. I’m just getting into downloading onto my own android device, and finding the download feature does not detect whether a file downloaded is even playable on the device. Specifically, X265 files seem to be unable to play. I thought the download feature was supposed to figure out if you can play the file directly, and allow a download, but do a transcode if you can’t.
It seems I jumped the gun because my last items on the download list are failing. One movie and a playlist of documentaries are getting the "there was an error downloading this file. I’ve got a bandwidth monitor on my S10 and it jumps to 8mbit/s for a few seconds and then drops to idle.
