I’ve got a Plex Media Server running on Windows 10. It works great, but sometimes there’s problems, like today.
We are going on a long car trip and I want to download some movies so I don’t eat up my cellular bandwidth.
It’s an Android Samsung A7 tablet (pretty fast) and all the permissions seem to be set right. I tried logging in as my admin and as a user that has download permission.
All I get is ‘Some items could not be downloaded, tap to retry’.
Last time I checked, on some devices you can choose how much storage is allocated to the Plex app for downloads, maybe see if it needs to be increased?
We have an issue when transcoding is needed for the download and the server setting has limit on number of simultaneous transcodes and the download is for several files - in excess of the limit of the transcode sessions. This will be fixed in Plex Media Server 1.30.2
Same problem for my iOS device:
The “New Downloads” feature(?) have never worked for me. Going on for over 2 years now. Plex will never fix this. Just accept that Plex is a streamer, and use VLC for downloads to your device.
For iOS we are looking into an issue where downloads fail when the app goes into the background and the process is terminated by iOS. This is being investigated
Please could you run on the current versions of Plex Media Server - suggest running on beta 1.30.2.6563 and for Plex for iOS - the current version being 8.13 and with server debug logging not disabled - please capture the server logs and iOS logs and attach here together with details of the time of the download and failure and related screenshot
I can then establish if this is the background issue or different problem
The error occurs on both iOS and iPadOS Error occurs almost immediately, App is not in background. In the past, the download would fail after awhile, and sometimes the d/l would succeed (i.e. if d/ling a 6 ep show, maybe 4 would d/l successfully before a fail).
So whatever fixes have been done have made it worse for me.
PMS Version 1.30.1.6562

You had Plex Media Server Debug Logging disabled - I cannot see the download sequence on the server side but I can see there were these transcoder errors
Jan 16, 2023 08:16:02.667 [0x7fa23ddaa0] ERROR - [Req#18291/Transcode/b0fd641a705434dbfa0ce5add03735506192bace/9aa7fb7a-4ecd-44a7-83c5-575a0830e980] av_interleaved_write_frame(): No space left on device
There have been some changes to the transcoder relating to hardware transcoding and drivers - it may have been related to that.
Please try with latest beta Release 1.31.1.6716 and if the problem remains, please upload Plex Media Server logs and Plex for iOS logs zip and indication as to when the download failed
The server logs show the Plex for iOS aborted the download part way through. Without the corresponding Plex for iOS logs, it is not possible to determine why
This extract from the Plex Media Server logs show the download starting at 08:28:05 and then aborted after getting to 16.6% of the download at 08:29:28

This may be related to iOS putting the app in the background after some time
If you are still having failures please get the zipped debug logs from both the server and the Plex for iOS app
We are currently looking into the iOS issues with the app going into the background
Spoke too soon,
I downloaded successfully to my iPad and iPhone Season 1 of Fawlty Towers. This was a download of 6 small 500MB files.
I then tried a download of 2001 A Space Odyssey, an 8GB file which failed on 2 attempts to the iPad. I was watching the Transcode/Sessions directory on the 2nd attempt and I did see the 8GB file transferred there, but then it failed.
iPad was open to the Plex App and awake the full time.
I had “Original Quality” selected for downloads on the iPad App, and 15G free on the iPad EDIT: A 3rd attempt was successful with Video Settings on iPad set to 1080p HD (High)
