New DVR Scheduler in v1.14.1.5488?

The new 1.14.1.5488 release note shows a New DVR Scheduler. I’m wondering what is new about it?

I’m wondering the same. I can’t believe they wouldn’t provide more detail on a feature like DVR. If a recording fails, no way to go back and fix it. The family might not be too happy with me.

I would also like to know what has been changed. Anyone who’s updated care to weigh in on the specifics?

The old scheduler had a number of problems, the worst being that it did not properly handle conflicts to find the best way to schedule all recordings. The scheduler was reworked to find the optimal recording schedule based on available airings and priority of recordings. They only difference you should see is that you have fewer conflicts now. If you were not experiencing any issues with the scheduler before, you may not notice a difference.

I am new to Plex and this forum. Installed Plex server on Nvidia Shield. Noticed that the DVR operation appears to have a bug or omission. While watching a live show on OTA (within Plex), the program failed to initiate a scheduled DVR event at the appropriate time. To do so, it would have required a ‘channel change’ on the USB connected tuner. But that did not occur. No recording commenced at deisgnated time. The scheduled record task DID occur once I backed out of PLEX and restarted within Nvidia Shield. By that time the first 3 minutes of the scheduled record had been missed. Typically on the inexpensive DVR boxes for OTA recording one will see an on screen message and witness a channel change to accomplish a scheduled recording. I would assume a similar action would occur on Plex.

Also, any chance we will see predictive behavior from this new scheduler? IE not recording shows it will immediately delete once complete due to any “keep or delete” rule triggering (too old, too many episodes, etc)?

Also it would be great to be able to input a show or series that is seasonal without having to wait for it to show up on the channel grid. for instance my wife wants me to make sure we record dancing with the Stars in 2019 but I can’t set that up until it shows up on the grid.

This would be almost impossible to implement to get you exactly what you want. However, I imagine that it could “work” two ways. They could do some sort of lookup of all shows that aired in your area over the last year or so, and match it to your search criteria which would require them to keep a repository of all shows (highly unlikely that it will happen, I’d wager). The only other option I could think of to make this happen is wildcard recordings, which may pickup things you don’t want.

%dancing with the stars%

  • New only
  • Channel (Auto) or (509)
  • Prefer HD

It would be a great thing to add to the recordings options. I think it would work pretty easy. Honestly, every time it updates the EPG, it checks your series recordings against the data and if you have something set to record then it grabs it. I’d much rather get a random “Dancing with the Stars - Catching up with the judges” episode based on my wildcards, than have to wait until the show comes back on and go find it. When I want to start recording a new show, at the moment, I have to set a calendar event to remind me to get on the Plex server a few days before it airs to grab it and set it to series record. This is how it’s always worked in all DVR’s, but that doesn’t mean it cannot be improved upon.

Oh, you could even add a thing in where they aren’t wildcards. Like, I watch Supernatural. If I delete the series recording in the middle of a long break, on accident. It would be nice to just open up a series recording screen, tell it I want to create one manually without searching the EPG and just type in Supernatural. That way, it won’t record any sort of “Supernatural wonders” type shows. It would only record shows called Supernatural and nothing else.

Hmm… the longer I have been typing, the more I now want this feature. I’d +1 this feature LOLOL

Or perhaps implement a scheduling queue system directly into Plex whereby we can set reminders to schedule shows into the future. This would be relatively simple but probably a low priority for Plex engineers.

With a wildcard option, maybe they could also have the DVR email you when a new show pops into the guide that matches the search. Presumably you’d then have two weeks to visit the server and convert the notification into a real timer if it matched the show you wanted (and set it as a series or whatever).

I love good ideas. I have a company that I use to do backups for customers. They are a huge company, service businesses all over the world, and their product has to be absolutely perfect. They cannot have any issues, or data won’t work right. When I email them with something that I’d like to see in the software, they implement it within a week. If I ask for a check box to allow me to decide whether I want a user to be able to see their backups or not, it’s in the software within a week.

Granted, they probably have way more money than Plex, but they implement things immediately. Plex is good, and I love it, but they don’t really seem to listen to the community unless they have to. Otherwise, they pick and choose what they want to listen to. It does kind of suck. It would be nice if Emby would update their interface. I cannot consciously switch to Emby because it is kinda ugly, and the metadata search is not as accurate as Plex. The metadata thing isn’t a huge deal, but it’s a part of the determining factors.

We need competition! Right now, Plex is best. It would just be nice if they could fix any one of the dozens of actual bugs that their software has, and add in features that the entire community wants, rather than little niche people who may want podcasts or news in their feed.
