New Feature: Albums / Single & EPs / Live Albums

See New Feature: Albums / Single & EPs / Live Albums - #4 by SimonXCIV for a link to the post explaining the new features.

If you are completely new to editing MusicBrainz and find the documentation difficult to digest it may be worthwhile to wait for @aubrey.wodonga’s getting started guide - see New Feature: Albums / Single & EPs / Live Albums - #26 by SimonXCIV

So I’ve got a question, what if you’ve got a compilation album, but it’s not showing up as a compilation album?

For example, on Musicbrainz, there’s a Creed compilation called ‘With Arms Wide Open: A Retrospective’. I have this in my Plex library, but it’s classing it as an album. Do I need to edit something on Musicbrainz?

It exists on Musicbrainz as a compilation. Release group “With Arms Wide Open: A Retrospective” by Creed - MusicBrainz

Check if it’s “matched” at all in your library.
Take a look at the guid and the parentGuid and the grandparentGuid in the Plex XML info of one of the songs.

Ok, so it’s matched and I checked the XML info, here’s what it says
guid=“plex://track/5d07f2cf403c6402902668fd” parentGuid=“plex://album/5d07c9de403c640290ccb946” grandparentGuid=“plex://artist/5d07bbfd403c6402904a6581”

Apparently there is some inconsistency with when plex picks the primary/secondary type of a release?

I have 3 remix releases, on Musicbrainz they are tagged as single/remix, EP/remix, and album/remix. Only the album/remix one shows up under “Remixes”, the other two are categorized as “Singles and EPs” by plex.

Also, Musicbrainz has Singles and EPs seperatly, can we get that on plex too?

The release group doesn’t have a Primary type set on MusicBrainz, only Secondary type of Compilation, which may be confusing the Plex agent. I suspect the Primary type should be set to Album.

Thank you for spotting the error.
I have fixed this on MB. It might take a few days before the change arrives in Plex.

Cool, thanks guys

Apologies for the delay getting this done @mrevenflow86 and anybody else who wanted to see it, I had a few other things to get done over the weekend. As promised, here’s a quick guide for editing MusicBrainz with album types

Happy to help. Let me know if anything isn’t clear!

This one really is [ EDIT: Would Be] a present. I have artists like prince, Geroge Benson, Bowie etc with soo many albums and i hate wading through some period where they did a tour and recorded every single concert and you scroll and scroll through 50 identical covered albums to get to the studio album your looking for.
I found this as well with Tidal when within plex…it put all the live and compliations in chrological order rather than grouping them…I’m guessing this issue also will be fixed now, [EDIT…except it hasn’t?. Maybe I’m still waiting for this update?]
   Why doesnt this work?

I can’t find the exact setting in my music library to disable this type of sorting. Please screenshot the setting for me.

Make sure your advanced settings are shown.

So I really want this feature…It IS turned on… but searching for “live” and going to all artists in the search results…none of them have the live albums separated out???

Whats up

If you can paste the XML for a track that you’d expect to be in a ‘live’ album, I can take a look and see if there’s anything glaringly obvious there

"..." menu > Get Info > View XML

You need to refresh metadata before the new data is loaded as well. Try refreshing a single artist and see if you see the split.

While I do like the album type feature, putting every EP & Single behind a carousel-type feature was maybe not the best choice. There are artists out there that rarely produce albums. AFX for example (AFX - MusicBrainz) now has 1 album for me, and most of his other releases are hidden behind a slider.

Also, the EPs load together with the similar artists slider, which is odd, because my artists page is now mostly empty when it loads…

Nice addition, but could use some improvements!

I assume this is in web, not Plexamp?

Yes, I haven’t used Plexamp in a long time.
