New guy needs help with offline only Plex server

Hello, I posted this yesterday and for some reason it seems that it didn’t post correctly. I’ll try it again here. Apologies if it’s a duplicate:

Hello all. I’m new at this and quite honestly not very tech proficient. I can use some help here to make sure I am going about this the right way. I have a RV and am looking to have lots of streamed and saved recordings of shows and movies available to watch when we are in the RV and have no internet connection available to us, which is most of the time.

I have three TV’s in the RV, main, bedroom and outside. I’m trying to set something up so that the media center has about 4GB of storage with many movies pre-recorded and available for us to watch completely off line on all three TV’s. My plan is to use a Nvidia Shield TV Pro, using that as he centerpiece of the system in the RV. I would hard wire the Nvidia from HDMI out of the unit to HDMI into the main TV. I would use a Ethernet cable to run from the shield pro to a router that will NOT be hooked up to the internet at all. On each of the other two TV’s I would have a Firestick or a Roku so that using the router I can see content from the Nvidia unit on the other two TV’s using the router.

I’m told by people far more knowledgeable than I am about these things that I can choose to use Plex software to reside on the Shield TV Pro to run things, and that overall Plex is the better and easier to use choice. However the big caveat is that supposedly Plex either doesn’t work well or doesn’t work at all with no internet connection. This is my greatest area of concern in this whole issue. Will Plex work with no internet connection? I do not want to constantly fiddle with this system. I’m not a hobbyist. I just want to watch movies and shows on a system that works first time every time with no constant fiddling.

Again, I’m very non tech oriented so if anyone is kind enough to comment please keep the tech talk very, very basic. Thanks so much!

Literally having the same issue.

It looks like Emby might be a good bet. Unfortunately I already purchased the lifetime pass for plex. I will be testing Emby, as I have read a lot of posts with this issue for years and has never been resolved.

Looks like emby works, it is kind of pain to get the server onto Nvidia shield but there are some youtube videos that show you how to install the .apk onto the shield, but I have it offline and it starts up no problem, unlike Plex. The only thing is it needs to be connected to a router, but that router doesn’t have to have internet.

So plex can work fine with no Internet connection, however in order to add content to the server with rich metadata you will definitely need an Internet connection. However once that’s done and you’re on the road you should be fine.

I’ve found that the plex server on shield only seems to struggle with not having an Internet connection if it comes and goes. So I find between these two states a restart of the shield will solve your problem.

Hope that helps
