New Installation of Plex Media Server Will Not Start

Server Version#: v1.32.0.6918-6f393eda1
Player Version#: 1.70.2.3845-31e96af6

Windows 11 Version 22H2 Build 22621.1702

The Server software installed without any reported errors. It did not start the server Interface or put an icon on the desktop for the server.

Starting the server with its program icon did not start the server interface or report any errors, but the Server was found to be running as a Windows Background Process on the Task Manager.

After installing the Server software, the Plex Player Interface does not see the Server, nor could I find any setting on the player to set the user’s name and password for the Server.

The Server software was downloaded and installed from Plex Web site, uninstalled and reinstalled from the Microsoft Store.

All the files seemed to be installed in the proper location.

There is no VPN service on my computer.

I tried starting the Server with my firewall turned off to no avail.

If necessary, I could post the entire log, but for now I will just provide a few of the errors reported. I am not knowledgeable about computer programing so the selection provided might not be the best. The whole log can be provided it that would help.

Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Rich

With your link I logged on to the Website’s version of the player and did not find anything different from the Windows version of the player that I had used prior to this post. Thank you for the super fast reply.

Right click that link and open in an incognito window

If you still get nothing zip the log file and drop it in the window here on your next post

This is not the server log. This is the log of the standalone desktop Plex client.
If the icon is labeled “Plex”, you have only a player installed.
It must be labeled “Plex Media Server” to have a server.

I don’t think that the app store has the server software available. I think there is only the player in there.

Download the server software directly from the Plex website. Links at the bottom of this forum page.

The incognito window login did not appear to work.

Plex Media Server.1.zip (47.8 KB)

Thank you for your assistance.

I had gotten the log file form the Plex\Plex Media Server\logs directory, but now see there is a Plex Media Sever\logs directory I should have gone to. Thank you for the correction.

I have uninstalled the version of the Media Server I had downloaded from the Microsoft Store rebooted the computer and then reinstalled the Media Server version gotten directly from the Plex Web site. Tested it and got the same result. The Version I got is: PlexMediaServer-1.32.3.7089-b0a36929b-x86_64

Sorry I should have been more specific. Generally, they ask for the whole log folder but most importantly I’d be looking for Plex Media Server.log
Screenshot (3602)

Or you can look in that one yourself and use the search. Look for the words corrupt or malformed

Or you can upload it here if you want, it’s up to you

Normally I wouldn’t suspect a corrupt database but someone else had this problem on a new install the other day

Do you have any type of 3rd party antivirus program?

Do you get anything if you go to http://[server.local.ip.address]:32400/web

Substitute [Server local ip address] with the ip address of the Windows machine the server is installed on

i.e. [ http://192.168.1.5:32400/web ]

When you go to the ip or to the other link I gave you, what do you see? A screenshot including the address bar might help

Plex Media Server.zip (33.0 KB)

I have Norton Internet Security on my computer, that has an anti-virus program. I did not try turning that off, only the firewall.

It is getting a little late for me and I am very tired. I will look into your suggestions tomorrow. I am not experienced at dealing with computer stuff at this level, but can usually figure simple stuff out on my own.

Thanks again for your assistance.

If Norton isn’t the problem I would just delete everything and try to reinstall tomorrow

Follow this guide
https://support.plex.tv/articles/201941078-uninstall-plex-media-server/

Sorry you’re having so much trouble with this. A new install shouldn’t be so hard

See what you can done tomorrow and let us know.

Per your suggestion, the Media Server was tested with both my Norton Firewall and Anti-Virus were turned off, to no avail.

I created a Plex Account years ago. I do not remember installing the server or any other Plex software at that time, but my memory often times is not as good as I think it is, so just to be safe or maybe crazy, some extra steps were added to the uninstall instructions provided by Plex.

After doing the uninstall using Window’s Programs and Features options, I was surprised to find the directories for the Plex App and Plex Media Server were not removed from the AppData\Local directory. I went ahead and deleted them. Next, using Regedit all the directories associated with Plex and Plex Media Server were deleted from the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software directory.

My computer was restarted, the installation files for the Media Server and Windows Player App were downloaded and installed. However, the Media Server software was installed on a different drive than the last installation.

It worked. Thanks again for your assistance, without it I would have given up.
