Fresh Windows installation. I’ve downloaded the Media Server, installed it, and logged in. Somehow we’ve skipped the step for setting up the server itself. I’m being sent to the login page, I log-in and I’m just seeing the Plex web app. When I go to Library, the prompt is - install Media Server. I just did that… I’ve used Plex for years on various devices and I’m baffled.
Okay, I’ve deleted everything, including AppData, and logged out of everywhere. I repeat the process - I get the same result. Seriously, the Media Server not having a separate interface for debugging purposes is quite counterintuitive when trying to troubleshoot what the hell is going on.
In order to complete the setup you need to open your Plex Media Server through its local IP.
If you’re on the same machine… open http://127.0.0.1:32400/web in your browser. If you’re on a different machine inside your home network, use http://[PMS IP address]:32400/web instead. This will bring up a wizard/dialog where you can name your server and link it to your Plex account (as well as creating your first libraries).
Once you “claimed” your server (=linked it to your Plex Media Account), you’ll also be able to access it from other Plex apps or via http://app.plex.tv/desktop.
Thanks, Tom, for the prompt reply. That’s the issue, actually. I’m accessing the PMS through localhost:32400/web and when i go to My Library it prompts me to download PMS…
I can’t access the “claim server” setup for some reason. Even after logging out and uninstalling everything Plex related from my machine.
Yep, I did clean the AppData and the registry. Logged out. Uninstalled Plex. Performed this a couple of times already and did it once more just now. Same result. That’s why the topic title is Plex is driving me insane. I just don’t see how am I supposed to start over.
I think I had set up the server once, then disassociated it from Devices because my TV didn’t recognize it. The TV app is a completely different gripe. Everything used to work flawlessly on my old PC. Maybe we’ve got Windows 11 (latest build) to blame?
@teknojunky Well, exactly - I’m accessing the PMS through the icon in the tray. It opens up localhost but when I try to add media to my library it says “Install PMS”. It’s a vicious circle. That’s on Win 11. Ran PMS on Win 10 before my PC upgrade and it worked like a charm for years, so I’m pretty confused what went wrong this time around.
@dbirch I have issues with my PSU right now so my PC is unavailable will get back to you once it’s back up.
