Plex is driving me insane

Fresh Windows installation. I’ve downloaded the Media Server, installed it, and logged in. Somehow we’ve skipped the step for setting up the server itself. I’m being sent to the login page, I log-in and I’m just seeing the Plex web app. When I go to Library, the prompt is - install Media Server. I just did that… I’ve used Plex for years on various devices and I’m baffled.

Okay, I’ve deleted everything, including AppData, and logged out of everywhere. I repeat the process - I get the same result. Seriously, the Media Server not having a separate interface for debugging purposes is quite counterintuitive when trying to troubleshoot what the hell is going on.

In order to complete the setup you need to open your Plex Media Server through its local IP.
If you’re on the same machine… open http://127.0.0.1:32400/web in your browser. If you’re on a different machine inside your home network, use http://[PMS IP address]:32400/web instead. This will bring up a wizard/dialog where you can name your server and link it to your Plex account (as well as creating your first libraries).

Once you “claimed” your server (=linked it to your Plex Media Account), you’ll also be able to access it from other Plex apps or via http://app.plex.tv/desktop.

Thanks, Tom, for the prompt reply. That’s the issue, actually. I’m accessing the PMS through localhost:32400/web and when i go to My Library it prompts me to download PMS…

I can’t access the “claim server” setup for some reason. Even after logging out and uninstalling everything Plex related from my machine.

Did you previously run an instance of Plex on that machine?
Make sure to clear the registry too when doing a full wipe/reinstall of the server.

Thanks again for the quick replies.

Yep, I did clean the AppData and the registry. Logged out. Uninstalled Plex. Performed this a couple of times already and did it once more just now. Same result. That’s why the topic title is Plex is driving me insane. I just don’t see how am I supposed to start over.

I think I had set up the server once, then disassociated it from Devices because my TV didn’t recognize it. The TV app is a completely different gripe. Everything used to work flawlessly on my old PC. Maybe we’ve got Windows 11 (latest build) to blame?

A post was split to a new topic: Audio delay with TrueHD

what does http://<IP_OF_PMS>:32400/identity show?

when media server is running on windows, there should be an icon in the tray by the clock.

double clicking that should open the browser to the server ip.

if there is no icon in the tray, then either the server is not running or not installed.

from the downloads page, make sure you downloaded server not one of the app player downloads.

what version of windows?

@teknojunky Well, exactly - I’m accessing the PMS through the icon in the tray. It opens up localhost but when I try to add media to my library it says “Install PMS”. It’s a vicious circle. That’s on Win 11. Ran PMS on Win 10 before my PC upgrade and it worked like a charm for years, so I’m pretty confused what went wrong this time around.

@dbirch I have issues with my PSU right now so my PC is unavailable will get back to you once it’s back up.

@Wobblz that means that the server is reporting as claimed, see You need to reclaim your server, but don't dare to touch the Windows Registry for how to re-claim it and get access back.

Thanks, man, you’re a life-saver! <3

The GitHub tool didn’t do the trick, but the registry edit did it for me.
