New iOS Plex Experience - What happened to download button for one-time purchase users?

Server Version#: 4.145.1
Player Version#: Last version on iOS (beta)

What happened to the download button for “one-time purchase pass” users? I bought it for £5 to be able to download to my iOS device. It has been working with the older version of the app but now I don’t see the download button, nor do I see any option in the settings to be able to restore my one-time purchase. What’s going on? Am I missing something or did you completely forget about the one-time purchase users?

The one-time activation didn’t cover downloading media.
You might have been dealing with downloads from a user’s Plex Pass Server. If their account & Plex Pass membership predates the requirement to have a Plex Pass for downloads, you could have benefited from that (Plex is calling that „grandfathering“).

It seems there’s currently an issue with that „inherited“ option to download. Plex have commented earlier that they’re working to fix this.

Edit: the basic playback / app usage of the mobile clients will no longer require an activation fee (starting with the release of the new apps). Though you’ll require a Plex Pass or the new Watch Pass to watch media remotely from your own or a shared server.

What if I’ve already paid the one-time mobile app activation fee?

For users who have already paid a one-time, in-app activation for either our mobile Android or iOS app, an extended trial for the new Remote Watch Pass subscription is available. To make use of it, you need to:

  1. Start your Remote Watch Pass subscription through our mobile app.
  2. Make sure it is on the same mobile platform where the original purchase was made (e.g., iOS/iPadOS if your activation was through the App Store).
  3. Ensure you’re using the same app store account that made the original purchase (e.g., the same Apple ID).

Example: If you originally did a one-time activation of our iOS app, then you need to use our new mobile app on an iOS/iPadOS device to start a Remote Watch Pass billed through the App Store, while signed in to the same Apple ID that made the original purchase.

Thank you for the detailed reply. I will wait for the fix to be released and will probably use the extended trial period for the remote watch pass.

Today’s update should fix the problem that „grandfathered accounts“ were no longer able to download items to the mobile apps.

The one-time activation didn’t cover downloading media.

I’m pretty sure it did. I’ve Neve had a Plex Pass but I did unlock the iOS mobile app and have been downloading from my Plex Media Server to my phone for travel for years. Until yesterday when I upgraded the app. I see the FAQ says an ‘extended Remote Watch Pass trial is available’, but I can’t find any buttons in the iOS app for this trial nor any indication on how lengths extension might be. As far as I was concerned everything worked fine and I did not expect an app update to remove features I paid for :frowning:

No.
Are you sure you were downloading from your own server or was that a server of a friend who has granted you permission to download media from their libraries? If that friend has an active Plex Pass membership and the “grandfathering” rules applied to both of you, you could have used downloads.

The in-app activation for mobile apps only removed the 1-minute playback restriction. It’s not adding any Plex Pass features.

100% guaranteed it has nothing to do with anyone else’s server because I don’t know anyone else with a Plex server and no-one else knows I have one. I’ve always found this idea of hosting media files for other people kinda of weird.

I’ve checked https://account.plex.tv/en/payments and there is nothing about me ever having a PlexPass and I would definitely know about a subscription payment.
So yeah, with that one-time unlock feature I was able to download my files from my PMS across my local wifi and then watch them while away from my house and offline. It definitely worked, and I definitely did not have a PlexPass.
