I upgraded my PLEX server this week as I was hoping to start downloading more 4k content. But I noticed it’s not transcoding well. I get a lot of buffering (regardless of which device I am playing back on) and stopping. https://i.imgur.com/SGqlEeK.jpg
I have all the hardware acceleration settings properly set that I often see folks here suggesting. https://i.imgur.com/EjUbI3X.jpg
I have tried playback on my laptop, on my ROKU ultra, on my Chromecast Ultra, and even on the PLEX server itself.
Is there something I’m missing? The only other thing is that I always watch movies movies with subtitles on, and I saw someone mention that it causes transcoding to work harder. But even with subs turned off it takes a long time to start playback and then within a minute or so it’ll start buffering pretty bad.
You’ll need to try playing something then providing your PMS logs so we can check why hardware transcoding isn’t working. The CPU in that NUC is barely strong enough to handle the 4K content so I would expect buffering if it can’t use the hardware.
OH! That’s probably the problem. I’ve seen people suggest this unit. (I switched because my Synology wasn’t as powerful as I wanted). It seems this unit is somewhat better, but I am surprised this isn’t working as I thought it would.
Okay, I’ll just not DL 4K stuff. The CPU does peg out at 100%. I thought that was because it wasn’t using hardware acceleration. I downloaded the logs but I don’t know how to read them.
