New Player on the Apple TV

LOL

I’ve been looking into this and seems to be a problem in ffmpeg, the library mpv uses to decode video, audio and subtitles. I’ve tried this file in mpv for desktop and also in Plex Media Player (which uses mpv under the hood too), and same issue in both :frowning:

These are tickets open in mpv and ffmpeg repositories:

Not sure what can we do about it right now, the last link is 3 years old already :scream:

Hi team,
Even on the latest beta, the ±10 sec skip gestures don’t work, and scrubbing through the video is very touchy - a tiny slide on the trackpad tends to skip several minutes at a time (when I only wanted to go back 40 seconds).
I posted about this here, but never got any reply about it.
I’m running the latest beta.
Other forum posts seem to indicate that ±10 sec skip is working for some, it isn’t for me?

Yes the 10 sec skip is very touchy indeed, as if the remote is too sensitive

  1. How is the 10 second skip / back supposed to work? Holding the trackpad and clicking like the old video player doesn’t appear to work for me.
EDIT: Upgrading to the latest 1.37 beta resolved the 10 second skip for me.

  2. Scrubbing is definitely touchy as is fast-forwarding and reversing. Does it slow down / speed up the more you do it?

  3. I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned before, but in the old player I believe if you accidentally started scrubbing, you could press the “menu” button to go back to where you were before you started scrubbing. This happens accidentally when picking up the remote at times. Right now if you press the menu button it stops playback and goes to the movie info screen.

Awesome! Thank you @sergiou87
But my receiver doesn’t show that it’s receiving DTS. Are you decoding the DTS on the AppleTV and sending out HDMI via LPCM?

Glad the new experimental player is giving you guys the flexibility to support all these new formats. Hopefully you come up with a way to support the HD codecs.

I find that it is too easy to make the top menu trop down, you touch the pad and it drops down without even swiping down…

Totally agreed

TVOS 12.1.2 beta 1 and new plex expirimental player - playback randomly freezes. This also happens on MrMC plex plugin. Also occurring on iOS 12.1.2 beta 1.

@sergiou87 - any updates on HDR support? I hope this is still prioritized.

Yeah it’s still prioritized. Apple doesn’t make it easy for third-party players to support real HDR content though, so it’s being hard to get it working

Well, thanks for the continued support!

I’ve been beta testing the Plex on an Apple TV 4K (32GB) connected to a 1080p TV for a couple months. I have seen an odd issue with at least the last 2 builds (currently on 1.37 (11125)), if not since first testing it:

If I’m browsing my movie collection, for example, and I’m looking at all my movies with their posters, the posters look fine. Then when I actually select some of the movies and I’m looking at the movie details, the movie poster now looks very grainy. But this is not on every movie. The larger poster view of Ready Player One looks grainy, but The Incredibles 2, that I just added, looks fine on closeup.

Is anyone else seeing this?

After the latest update, just touching the trackpad fast forwards or rewinds the playback. It should just bring up the timeline, please fix it.

Also, please add the audio output selection in the drop down menu bar, as the regular player has.

Thank you in advance!

What about preview thumbs while pausing and scrubbing? Do they show up for anyone with the new player?

Yes, if you have thumbnail generating task enabled on the server and the video video you’re playing already has thumbnails generated. My server has been creating thumbnails 12 hours a day for the past month or so, but I think it will take another one or two to complete

Interestingly, the Infuse and MrMC do show thumbnails without having them in the database.

Correct. Infuse creates the thumbs on-the-fly.

Would be a huge step back, if the new Plex player can’t do that.

Aren’t thumbnails generated by the server by default?

How accurate is the HDR implementation right now. Is it where it needs to be or should I hold off watching HDR content until then?

Thanks.

AFAIK the thumbs are created by the ATV itself, if the video format is an AppleTV-compatible.

If you have an HDR file to an HDR TV, it’s fine, looks good. Has for a long time actually.

If you have an HDR file and need it tonemapped back down to SDR, no dice. Don’t think that is on road map.
