New Plex Desktop App is treated as a remote player, not local

Server Version#: 1.16.5.1488
Player Version#: 1.0.0.792-d4adb056

Hello,

Just trialling the new Plex Player for Windows. The windows machine and the server are on the same subnet, however the server thinks it is remote and hence transcodes. I have setup the subnet as a local network in the app. I’ve been looking through the menus and I can’t find where it might be designated as a remote player.

Any ideas?

Edit: Looking at the Status screen it does say that the player is local, however it is being transcoded down as if it is a remote player. The PC the player is on a has enough grunt to play 4K so not sure. Is there some place I can edit the profile of the player to make it not seem so wimpy to the server?

There’s many potential reasons for the server to transcode your content.
Sometimes a weak link in the network can be enough to tell Plex it doesn’t have sufficient bandwidth to transfer the content and therefore make it transcode.

A look to your server logs can help making sure what makes your server transcode… can you reproduce the behavior, wait a minute and then download the log files from your Plex Media Servers (Settings > Server > Manage > Troubleshooting > Download Logs) and attach the resulting zip-file here?

Sounds like it’s working as intended… oh Plex devs… you so crazy!

Well there seems to be some sort of problem now as the server is now transcoding to my shield as well. All clients are directly attached to a 1Gb/s network.

The transcoding only started after installing the new windows app.

I have uninstalled the Desktop app and the server seems to be now working as usual. I noticed that I can access the Server settings from this new Desktop app. I noticed also that the WAN IP as LAN bandwidth setting had been checked, which I unchecked as well. I will experiment over the coming days as to which combination causes the local player to be seen as a remote player.
