New Plex desktop app will not recognize Chromecast device

Hello all -

Up front: please know that my understanding around the technical aspects of troubleshooting Plex is rudimentary, at best. I appreciate your patience and whatever degree of hand-holding until I get a grasp of the solution(s). And thank you, in advance. On to the the issue…

I have successfully used the web-based Plex Media Player with my iMac for several years, mostly through my mobile device (iPhone). With the web version no longer being supported as of next year, I decided I’d get ahead of the game and download the Plex desktop app.

Download and sign-in for the Plex desktop app went smoothly and recognition of my media all seems to be in order. The issue is: when I select the cast icon in the top right of the window, my Chromecast device is not listed. My question is: how to I get the Chromecast device to appear and link up with the new desktop app?

Possibly worth noting:

  • I do use a VPN. In the past, when attempting to cast to my Chromecast device from the Plex web-based player, the “Playback Error - The server [blank] does not have a valid connection for casting. Check that the server is claimed in server settings” message has appeared. After turning off the VPN, I was able to cast. So - in attempting to use the new Plex desktop app, I turned off the VPN, but it seems that whether on or off, the Chromecast device is not listed.

  • My current MacOs is the latest version of Sierra.

Happy to provide any other information, but again, I’m not well-versed in tech, so I might not be immediately familiar with the related solutions and abbreviations.

Thanks again.

Casting to Chromecast devices is not supported. That only works from the Chrome browser. The new desktop app only supports casting to other Plex clients.
