New Plex remote iPhone app

I just started my Mac Mini HTPC journey today so it’s great to see a thread about this program. It’s great to see a community like this that creates and shares input on new ways to use Plex.

@turbolag

Have you submitted for approval yet?

Come on, this thread has had over 10,000 views now

Fake

Sorry for neglecting the app and this thread. I have just moved into a new house, and my priorities have shifted a bit.

I am actively trying to get the app on the App Store, and am currently in communication with Apple to resolve a developer agreement issue they have on their developer site.

I apologize for the delay, and I appreciate your interest.

Also,

Unfortunately, the version 1.0 will not work with Plex apps, but there is gesture control which you can use to navigate and use apps. I have not been provided any information on the details of the library re-haul of Plex 0.9. As soon as I do, rest assured I will update Controllr to support Plex 0.9.

As soon as the app hits the store, I will explore the possibility of an iPad version.

Sounds a good start though Turbolag.

can you provide more details please ? I've been pretty disappointed with every iPhone remote so far ( bought 5 or 6 of them ) so i'm cautious. ( deleted all of them except Rowmote , but hardly ever use that either )

Does it have access to pictures ? File mode ? Recently added movies/TVshows ( most important ) ? Contextual menus ? ( this isnt as important but question is, can i navigate PLEX menus or do i need extra remote to access settings etc etc.... )

Ok, I bought the app, but cannot get it to connect and cannot find any help files or information anywhere.

The Support link on the app’s information page takes you to a login only page at https://muzisoftware.lighthouseapp.com/login which is not a lot of use without a login.

Edit:

ok, its connecting now, but I am having other issues, without anywhere else to go, I’ll log them below to aid troubleshooting/development:

1. Only Movies is populating with any information, TV Shows, Albums & Artists just show the alphabet scroller on the right.

I changed some network settings and this seems to have cured the population of the missing TV Shows, it seemed to be an issue with a connection

routing through from my iPhones Wifi to the LAN connected MacMini. Albums & Artists seem to be blank still will investigate those later.

2. Despite Plex being fully populated, not every movie retrieved the artwork. Upon further investigation, it seems to be the odd movie that

I have had to manipulate artwork manually!?!? Maybe this is a Plex issue, perhaps Plex doesn’t copy manually added artwork to the same place scraped

artwork is located, because all the scraped artwork seems to be coming through fine!?!?!

3. Is the artwork synced/cached on the iPhone for faster, smoother action?

If not, I would prefer this as I don’t care about consuming iPhone memory space for a better user experience and if some people do, perhaps it could be an option?

4. What is the Remote Screen for?

When I go into the remote screen, I seem to have a circle cursor that moves about the iPhone screen, but I don’t know what relation this has to Plex.

Also on this screen there is a info button which can’t be pressed, because the cursor simply overlays it if you try to touch the information logo.

5. The Season’s in TV Shows are not always in order. For example, I have “Desperate Housewives” (for my wife of-course :-). I don’t have all the Season’s

downloaded, but I do have the completed Season’s 1,2,3,5 and the current 6. When I go into Desperate Housewives, Controllr has the Seasons in the following

order, 2 , 3, 5, 6, 1, 6. I don’t know why it starts with Season 2. I also don’t know why it has split Season 6 into two.

Thanks for downloading drh.

At first launch, it may take some time before all of the artwork is downloaded. The artwork will then be stored locally on your phone for better performance on subsequent uses.

You should be able to press the info button on the remote screen (tested by several beta testers on several devices). Do not slide your finger to the info button, press directly above it. The remote screen allows you to navigate the Plex menu by swiping up, down, left and right. You can select menu items by tapping once, and go back by double tapping.

If you are willing to provide your video database file, I can try to reproduce the season ordering issue you are experiencing. It is located in ~/Library/Application Support/Plex/userdata/MyVideos34.db

Sorry for the support link not being directed to a proper web page. Since the application has been in review so long, I stopped using Lighthouse. I will set up a proper webpage for support as soon as I can.

Yes, it seems a lot better now most of the artwork has been downloaded once.
When I go back into the app, the TV show artwork for the first few shows (that fit on the screen) is instantly there, but if I scroll (by swiping up/down), it can still take a while for the newly revealed shows graphics to re-appear, yet, if I use the alphabetical scroll, it seems to force it to re-appear much quicker!

Yes, I have got the remote working. The only thing I am stuck with, is I can use it to navigate the main Plex menu and in the rest of Plex, but once I have entered into a sub-menu like TV Shows or have started playing a show, I can't figure out how to get back out to the menu system. I end up stuck in the paused screen, I've tried double tapping, and all sorts of gestures, but I can't seem to find a back/exit gesture.

Ok, will do, where do I send it?
I did have some other issues initially that I had never noticed before. For example I had duplicate TV shows etc when I first launched the Controllr app, even though the same screens in Plex looked fine.
I managed to cure that by doing a database clean in Plex, however this didn't fix the strange episode issue.
I have also used the Plex Database Editor to see if that showed up any anomalies with my data, but everything looks normal in there.
I have also checked the source directory to see if there was anything strange with the naming conventions, but all the files seem uniformly similar.
The only thing I do know, is where Controllr is splitting season 6, is at episode 6 which was missing for a while and was downloaded a number of weeks after the rest of the episodes.
I don't know if that's at all relevant :-)

Excellent.

Its certainly looking like this will be my app of choice for Plex.
I will give it the all important WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) test later :-)

Of all the remote apps I have tried, we have been using the free XBMControl up until now. Its very basic but works perfectly every time. Its one of the few apps that snaps into the existing Plex software, unlike many others require you to install a server side application. XBMControl is even announced by Plex's notification system that a remote control has connected (which has a comfort factor).

I like the graphical quality that Controllr brings, and will hopefully be settling on this as the "remote of choice for Plex" but as I'm sure you will appreciate, all the graphical beauty aside, the actual performance must not hinder the general day to day usage. In my previous experience, the kiss of death for many remote apps has been basics e.g. they take too long to launch and navigate or they leave you trying to remember how to perform a particular action.

Great work so far.

Hi. I bought this morning Controllr app. And it’s O.K. Is there any possibility to have fullscreen/window switch from Iphone?

Great start, and I have good hopes for this app WHEN it’s finished.

Love the gestures, but I think they need some work. I don’t know how the touch framework works but I’d prefer if one swipe never could result in anything else than one step in the menu. I’d rather lift my finger several times and count in my head while navigating, than keeping my finger on the display and watching what’s happening on the TV. This becomes extra important since there’s a bit of delay and you want to be sure that if you swipe down 5 times that you will navigate 5 steps down in the menu.

Limitations:

  • Can’t bring up the menu while plying a movie
  • Can’t scroll using gestures in Audio and Subtitle Settings.
  • When watching a movie I can’t stop the movie and exit to menu
  • When browsing a TV Show season episodes, the double tap behaves as exit but should behave as esc

To solve all these limitations and to be able to control all of Plex, basically all you need is 8 keys/gestures:

escape, c, i, left, right, down, up, enter
  • one tap should always behave like enter
  • double tap should always behave as escape (not exit as it does now in some cases)
  • tap with two fingers should behave as c (to brings up the menu)
  • haven’t got an idea for i yet, and triple tap seems a bit so quirky

    Feature requests:
  • Show list of unwatched items in Controllr
  • Show list of recently added items in Controllr

Sometimes when I have Controllr running while watching a movie, the movie stutters every other second. Don’t know it’s some temporary issue.

Brilliant summary and I completely agree with your gesture / control idea's.

I have downloaded loads of remotes for plex and for some strange reason no-one seems to cater for "c" which means I have to keep vnc'ing into plex from a computer all the time just to be able to invoke "scan for new content".
This wouldn't be so bad if we weren't told all the time by dev's that we can't use any of the automatic scan options due to it causing problems with the library :-(

I appreciate all the feedback.

StevenD, I will implement the suggestions you have made for menu navigation in a following update. However, I decided to allow the swipe gesture to scroll depending on the amount of finger travel, I find single flicks far too tedious, especially while navigating a list of hundreds of items. If enough people suggest the same, I could add it as a setting to allow continuous scrolling or flicking.

Thanks.

Ok, looking forward to the next release :)

I have 300+ movies in my collection. If I'm on B and want to navigate to a movie that starts with M i press left and then down to "go to next letter" until I reach M. There's also something called "large scroll" which I think is 10 steps. Maybe a two finger swipe could do a "large scroll" and a single finger swipe could then do just one step :)

how come all the customized dvd covers I put don’t appear ?!

One more thing, You said the information is downloaded to the iphone, if so, how come the connection to Plex is necessary to view the movie library ? It would be nice to use the app as you personnal movie or tv show library viewer outside home, this could be a nice demo of you app…i mean i could show how you app looks to hundreds of people on a day to day basis, i don’t have hundreds of people home…

My customized covers are also missing, maybe a strange oversight with the Plex Library and Plex Media Server!?!?

I don't know, maybe one of the Plex Dev's have an idea on that one?

i have question about music. my music is in itunes and plex is using itunes library but your controllr doesn’t see it at all. are you working on it? is it going to be possible to see?

Bought it today and would also like it to flick once.

Also hope to see shows marked as watched.

Would like a stop button.

have a problem where tv shows seem to list in the order i added them. For example i know recently i added episode 16 of ugly betty to plex before adding episode 14 and 15. In plex it views correctly but in controllr it views episode 13, 16, 14, 15. Which is annoying if i didn't happen to know the episode titles to spot the problem.

ok i have bought the app.. now its time to test. ive been waiting for this for quite some time!
