New Plex User Here - Mac OS

Hello, I’ve recently become a Plex user here and wonder if someone may enlighten me on server settings as I’m having some issues with playback.

I have Plex running on a Late 2012 Mac mini, 2.4 I7 with 16GB ram and a 250GB SSD. All media is located on a Western Digital EX2100 in organized directories. There is no media directly stored on the server. All connections to router and switches are gigabit and cat 6 cables. Internet speeds are 25 down/10 up.

The Mac mini is set to sleep when not in use, thus a lag in connection when server is being accessed, but even when it finally finds the server, things sometimes play (home videos/photos) but sometimes fail to load. I was under the assumption this would be fairly efficient, but it frustrating when it doesn’t load or spins endlessly.

Is there a bottleneck in my system? Is there anything I can do to speed up the connectivity internally? Would hooking a HD up to the server make the “on” of the server any quicker? Should I turn energy saver off?

I appreciate and welcome any suggestions.

My mini i7 Server is running 24/7. Media is stored on Synology NAS. No problems. Can handle around 7-8 simultaneous transcodes. I would try disabling sleep. its a server.

Thank you. Disabled sleep and it’s snappier when accessed. I still have some videos that load the audio, but no video…exit and load a few more times and then they play
