New Plex User Qs

New Plex user … beware of some SUE “Stupid User Error” questions.

I installed Plex server on my Win 10 PC. I previously had Plex on this machine (4 yrs ago).

System SKU LENOVO_MT_80HE_BU_idea_FM_Lenovo YOGA 3 Pro-1370

Processor Intel(R) Core™ M-5Y71 CPU @ 1.20GHz, 1401 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)

8 G RAM

WiFi only

I have a WD MyCloud (not MyCloud Home) an Integra DRX receiver, 2018 LG C8 OLED.

All components are hard wired, except the PC which is WiFi only.

This was a fresh install.

The Web UI came up and all seems ok…

I added a small library of 4 K sample files on the PC which Plex found and I used the LG C8 Photos / Video app, which supports DLNA to access.

PLAYED beautifully…video and audio.

Next I moved some full 4K movies to the folder. They played video A-OK (On one the HDR came up in the corner of the LG) , but when they started there was a note at the top saying “Audio not played” (or something like that). The video / audio was good…but there must be something I am missing about the audio settings…

Here is the data on the file:
Duration : 2 h 10 min

Video : x265 3840x1608 (23.976 fps) @ 13.2 Mb/s (CRF 17)

Audio : English Dolby Atmos 7.1 @ 4252 kb/s
: English Dolby Digital 5.1 @ 640 kb/s

Is there any audio settings on the Server (couldn’t find any)

I presume the setting is on the client side …is there a Plex client for the LG (that is any good?)

Rather than play via the LG …is there another recommended approach.

Not anxious to add an other component to the setup…I have pretty much blown the “budget” on what I have

Thanks!!!

Well, probably the best recommendation for future use is never plan on using a Smart TV’s proprietary app store because they are almost always crappier or outdated compared to the mainstream platforms from Roku, Android TV, Apple TV, and Windows.

As for your immediate problem, the Server doesn’t have audio settings. It is all up to the client to set what it can decode, or else just pass it through to the surround receiver for decoding. I don’t know what the LG has in the settings.

Good point…suggestions on what I could / should use as the client?

Well I like the Roku devices, but I would at least get one of the 4K units, even for any 1080 TVs in the house. They seem a little bit snappier.

So,
Premiere/Premiere+ or
Streaming Stick+ (has 802.11ac) or
Roku Ultra (has infrared remote, 802.11ac, and Ethernet)

…would be my recommendations depending on what you want and could afford.

for full 4k/hdr & hd audio, nvidia shield is the best, simplest solution.

shield > 4k/atmos receiver > tv = full 4k hdr + hd audio

when you were playing by DLNA, I don’t think you can choose a different audio stream.

there is probably an LG plex client app, which would probably work better than generic DLNA.

the problem with smart tvs they don’t support HD audio (ie truehd/atmos).

so on the CLIENT you would need to choose a non-hd audio format (otherwise plex will transcode and typically cause problems).

this may or may not help you understand what is involved with 4k @ Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you - aka the rules of 4k - a FAQ

I recommend the Roku Ultra as well. (The remote is RF so you don’t have to point at the player or you can put it in a cabinet.)

Thanks for the response…would the Roku be a Plex client to the server?
